ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BM in piano performance, University of Colorado, Boulder
Awards:

2009 - Honor at Graduation, University of Colorado. Boulder 2013 - Nationally Certified Teacher of Music

Overview:
I am a passionate musician who is willing to share the love for classical music. I have earned the bachelor's degree in piano performance at the University of Colorado, Boulder with honor. Besides teaching, I have been accompanying school choir, church choir, local choir groups, individual voice and instrumental students. As a member of music teachers' association, I have worked on revising and developping music theory test, terms & signs test, music history test, and ear training test. I have also been the chair for various recitals, festivals and competitions.
EXPERIENCE
We learn the music by ear to some degree. It is perfectly fine to do so. But it is also important to be able to read notated music and be able to understand and realize on you own without hearing the music. To help student develop such skill, I encourage students to sing what they are playing, for example, right hand melody, or a left hand bass line. I ask students to think about the rhythm, pitches, what each symbols mean, etc. Those activities seem to help students understand the music they are learning.
METHODS USED
I combine a few lesson books to have a variety of music and try to cover various aspects of technical elements and musical styles. For beginners, in addition to the commonly used lesson books, such as the ones by Hal Leonard, Alfred, and Faber, I use the lesson books that I developed. For students in intermediate and advanced level, I teach standard classical piano literature, such as the works by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Haydn, Debussy, Kabalevsky, Bartok, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Brahms, Schumann, Clementi, Kuhlau, etc. I also use materials that I developed to teach music theory and musical symbols and terms.
LESSON STYLE
I choose the material and adjust the amount and the speed of my teaching to match each student's strength and weakness and the speed of their progress. I try to have students be active aurally, visually, and kinesthetically at each lesson. I am very clear in explaining, show the example of "how to practice at home," and clearly communicate what we are trying to achieve. I try to make sure that the student has understood what I taught. I work on being accurate and strive for making the music beautiful.
