Overview:
I am an enthusiastic and competent music instructor who loves working with students of all ages and levels. In 2018, I graduated from Ithaca College with a B.M. in Music Education with a concentration in flute. I will be pursuing a M.M. in Flute Performance at Boston University this coming fall. In previous years, I have performed as principal flutist with the Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. Regarding my academic experience, I have completed two years of student teaching within my degree, working closely with elementary school and middle school students, teaching private lessons, large ensembles, general music, and music theory. I am a certified music together teacher, providing me with the opportunity to work with students ages 0-7. My passion for music provides students with the opportunity to find a love for their own music, whatever that may look like! I want my students to have a goal when beginning private lessons (pursuing a professional career in music, playing for fun, singing with family, teaching instrument pedagogy, etc). I will be sure to ask you what your goals are and mold my teaching style to whatever you need to achieve your goals!
EXPERIENCE
Throughout my undergraduate degree, I have completed two extremely rigorous and intensive teaching placements. From 2016-2017, I taught private lessons to 4th-5th grade students at Dryden Elementary School. In 2017, I taught 6th-8th grade band, general music, music theory, and private lessons for each individual instrument at William Annin Middle School in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. I am more than comfortable and competent when teaching beginning-intermediate level students on oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and voice. As a professional flutist, I have taught flutists of all ages and levels. I am comfortable teaching any level of student: from your very first note to advanced extended techniques on the instrument! I encourage my students to enter competitions, attend masterclasses, perform throughout the community (nursing homes/churches/etc.), and experiment with all kinds of music! As a music educator, it is my job to give each student the opportunity to find a musical voice through their instrument and keep them wanting to learn!
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, my customized lesson plans consist of the Standard of Excellence series, familiarizing students with musical notation, ear training, vocal use, and compositional techniques. In the first few lessons, I assess a students strengths, weaknesses, musicality, and other musical tendencies in order to provide them with appropriate exercises, etudes, and solo repertoire. In private lessons, I emphasize tone development, ear training, and vocalizing in order to introduce understanding of the musical content and development of musicality. It is important for me to incorporate sight reading, creativity, tone development, executive technique, and notational reading into my lessons in order to produce well-rounded students and musicians. For Adults, I am adamant about learning what they want to achieve from taking private lessons, and help them reach that goal! Whether it is singing/playing with grandkids or performing at their local church/community center, I will build each lesson around their needs! I am a strong advocate for Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory, catering to all different kinds of learners. As I spend more time with each student, I will be able to mold my teaching style to his or her learning strengths. Music is a universal language and must be treated as such!
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style can be summed up into just one word: Enthusiasm! While having fun and providing my students with a positive musical experience, I will always set high expectations for my students. I teach because music is how I live, laugh, breath, and communicate. I have found myself and my life path through music making. I want nothing more than to give aspiring musicians of all ages and levels the opportunity to find their own voice, passion, and enthusiasm through music! I bring enthusiasm, excitement, knowledge, and passion to each and every lesson, allowing my students to find success in each musical experience they have!
