Overview:
I am a dedicated vocal music professional who has a passion for encouraging and helping others reach their potential as creative artists. Primarily as a vocalist, lyric baritone, I have had the experience of performing in a wide variety of settings. For example as a chorus member i have performed multiple times at Carnegie Hall with the Westminster Symphonic Choir, throughout France and England with Westminster Kantorei Choir, and Barcelona with the Westminster Choir. As a soloist, I have held engagements most recently with the Spoleto USA Festival in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, and I have performed a wide variety of concert solos ranging from Haydn and Mozart Masses to early music. From 2009-2015, I was a high school choir director outside Nashville, TN in which I taught multiple scholastic ensembles and volunteer after school programs. These ensembles scored consistently high marks both at the state and regional level. My private students also received high marks at various adjudication festivals and many received collegiate scholarships for their music abilities, including two full ride scholarships. I am also an instrumentalist by trade, growing up in the concert and marching band world playing percussion and saxophone. I have continued to use these skills in pit orchestras for musicals. Additionally, i play acoustic guitar, first as a hobby, but now I have professional experience leading corporate worship for the past six years.
EXPERIENCE
My students, both private and classroom, will be quick to note my commitment to excellence as the core of my teaching. Through six years of classroom teaching and eight of private teaching, I have pushed myself and my students to present their most excellent work. To be clear, excellence does not mean perfection, but it does mean the student and teacher present their best in each lesson and their personal rehearsal time. My goal is to create a well-rounded musician capable in various styles and genres and to provide the skills needed to the student so that they may be life life long music learners.
METHODS USED
Each student will have an individualized plan that will be developed following an initial meeting. Once the goal of the student is clear, then I will present a process to achieve this goal. For example, my beginning piano students, this might include Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. But more often than not, I will pair a variety of core literature with a music theory/history lesson series. Students of voice can expect a variety of literature which will cater to their goals as well as strong pedagogy lessons and theory/history.
LESSON STYLE
My goal as a teacher is to inspire the musician within each student, and to that end, I consider the best methods of teaching to involve as much student participation as possible. I have found that my students have thrived the best in a positive, nurturing environment though with high expectations. As someone who has sat through dreaded piano lessons as a child, I know the deflated feeling often associated with monotonous lessons. I try to present lessons that are multifaceted and engaging for students of all levels. At the end of the day, I want my student to be exhausted but encouraged to continue experiencing the many joys of music.
