Overview:
I'm a passionate and enthusiatic instructor that loves sharing the gift of music with my students. I have been working professionally as a musician since I was thirteen years old playing in acoustic acts, jazz big bands, cover bands, original rock acts, jazz combos and doing solo classical guitar performances. I've toured, done countless studio sessions and have played in orchestra pits for musicals. One of my favorite performances was with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute Orchestra in 1987 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.  My other passion is composing and producing in every style imaginable and I have music in shows with NBC Universal and A&E as well as countless corporate and industrial projects. I love integrating my compositional backhround into my intrument lessons when appropriate to give my students a broader knowledge of how to use their instrument(s) and possibly compose themselves. I'm very patient and comfortable working with the novice to the most advanced players.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began back in my days at the university when I was a student instructor for beginning guitar courses.  At that time I realized early on that having a sense of humor was really important. Adding levity to the learning expeience helps students relax and ultimately play better.  I also had a few private students back then, and as my music career grew I picked up many private students as well as teaching jobs at music studios and colleges such as Bellevue Community College and Lake Washington Technical College. I also found myself teaching music theory, composition, and production and technology.
METHODS USED
I have a broad assortment of methodologies that I have collected over the years that I use with students. For children and adult beginners that want to read music generally I use Alfred's Adult or Children's courses and Hal leonard as well.  For more advanced students I'll use A Modern Method for Guitar out of the Berkeley School of Music or any number of classical or jazz books. I have a vast assortment of handouts and supplemental papers that encompass a broad range of styles and techniques that include both western traditional styles of music as well as world music styles.
LESSON STYLE
I  create custom lessons for each student depending on what their needs and styles are and I usually adapt to the energies of each lesson. I do have my own method for beginners that will accelerate their proficiency quickly and get them "playing" right from the get go. For clasical students of guitar I teach the Segovia short nail school which goes back to Fernando Sor. Again in this system playing cleanly and proficiently at the beginning is stressed. For advanced jazz students of improvisation I teach the George Russell Lydian Chromatic approach.
