Overview:
I’m a native of Kingwood, Texas, and a saxophone performer and instructor who believes that music’s fundamental purpose is to enrich lives. I am a graduate of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, attaining a Bachelor of Music in Saxophone Performance in 2013, studying under world-renowned saxophonist Dr. Otis Murphy. My experience has led me to perform and compete around the country as a soloist, and as the baritone saxophonist in the IU Wind Ensemble and the IU Saxophone Ensemble. I am comfortable in a variety of styles and settings, wherever the saxophone is present. Currently I teach lessons from my studio at home and at local schools, in addition to playing in a couple of local bands.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching lessons to beginners nine years ago, during my high school years, and continuing to do so as an undergraduate at Indiana University. I took a break from teaching between university graduation and 2016, having recently decided to relocate and start up my teaching business on Musika and elsewhere. At IU I studied saxophone pedagogy under Otis Murphy and Tom Walsh. Having observed and commented on dozens of lessons given by my peers, I know what teaching methods have the greatest effect on the student’s advancement, for all age and ability levels.
METHODS USED
My main teaching resource is Larry Teal’s The Art of Saxophone Playing. If the student is in a school band program, much of the what we work on will be dictated by what their band director is having them prepare, such as marching band music, all-region/all-state etudes, solo and ensemble repertoire, or jazz band tunes. If the student is not in a school band program, we will work on material that suits their age and experience level, as well as their needs and goals as a saxophonist. Our lesson time is typically divided between warmup/fundamentals, scale material, and repertoire. If there’s an upcoming performance or competition, appopriate adjustments to the lesson structure will be made so the student can prepare adequately.
LESSON STYLE
I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement and constructive direction, as opposed to calling something “wrong” or “bad”, as this is the way to keep a student interested and motivated. I want every student to leave their lesson both happy about their playing, as well as eager to practice and make progress on their own. I also strongly believe in the power of listening. Often, I will have a short studio or live recording to listen to with the student, so we can discuss what we notice about that specific performer’s playing, what we like/don’t like, and how all of these ideas tie into the concepts we’re currently going over in their own playing. Any sort of music education should have some sort of awareness and appreciation of popular music. For that reason, I try to see what genres and styles my students to listen to for recreation and bring that into my teaching, for example, arranging a duet of a favorite song for us to play.
