2011 - Winner of Boston College Battle of the Bands
Two of my favorite things in the world are playing guitar and teaching other people how to do it. I became enamored with guitar as a teenager and made it my life’s passion. I received my degree in Music from Boston College and began playing and teaching professionally after graduating. I am the lead singer and guitar player for the bluegrass band Mile Twelve. We play all over Boston and New England.
I began teaching private lessons in college to friends who wanted to play. My easygoing attitude and deep knowledge of the instrument encouraged people to listen and learn. After graduating I gave lessons through music stores, skype and in my own home studio. Teaching has always come naturally to me because I genuinely love it. I engage personally with each student and bring out their own unique musical voice.
My goal is not to hand out licks and snippets, but to develop your musical voice. I begin by showing you how scales and chords are laid out on the fretboard of the guitar. Together we will explore the nature of music, the contrast between major and minor, the struggle between dissonance and consonance. We will explore what’s ‘blue’ about the blues, what’s blistering about bluegrass, what’s mysterious about jazz and all the different rhythmic styles of accompanying. I will give you the tools to build your own unique style.
My first priority is your success. I am there as a guide and as a friend, a coach and a mentor. I will walk the line with you between pushing forward and checking in right where you are. I have been doing this for a long time and I know how to create sustainable progress for any student. You will learn how to play the guitar, that’s a promise.
