ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Bachelor's of Music, Berklee College of Music, Music Education Teaching Certification , Massachusetts and Georgia, P-12 Music

Overview:
My name is Akirah Renée. I am a native of Atlanta and I love teaching music! I have been a vocalist all of my life and want to help students perfect their craft. I've taught in both music classrooms and with private music students ages 4-over 70. These teaching experiences and my training from Berklee College of Music have equipped me with the necessary tools to create and maintain an open learning environment in any setting. Under my tutelage, students will not only learn proper singing technique, performance technique, and discover who they are as a musician, they will sound spectacular doing it!
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since high school; working in several summer camps, after-school programs, and as a peer tutor. Performing music has been a part of my life since before I can remember. One day it clicked that I should fuse my passion for music and talent for teaching to become a Music Educator. That is how I found myself at Berklee College of Music, the #1 music school in the country. At Berklee, I performed in several bands and studio recordings around Boston. In the Music Education Department, I refined my teaching skills and learned contemporary music teaching practices for both voice and instrumental students. I also began teaching private vocal lessons and volunteered as a vocal instructor in a local community program. For my student teaching requirements, I taught General Music, Band, and Chorus to students grades Pre-K-12th grade in two local schools in Boston. After completing my degree, I returned to Atlanta where I continue work as a vocal coach in several community programs, teach private vocal lessons, and serve as the Music Teacher at a middle school in Clayton County. Teaching and performing music is my life's passion!
METHODS USED
As a musician, it is important to refine performance, technique, and style. I like to find out what the student's goal or difficulty is in each of those categories. Then we plan a recital usually 4-6 months away. I ask the student to choose 4-5 songs that they enjoy and that feel would be a feat to perform. I choose 1 song that I think would challenge them in each of the musician categories. Then we work to prepare the 5-6 songs for the recital. The idea is to have an attainable goal to achieve within a certain amount of time. This requires the student to create succesful practice habits outside of lessons and the recital gives real world experience. For students I have had for more than a year, each recital showcases their improvement.
LESSON STYLE
In learning music, it is very important for students to have the freedom to explore and cultivate their own artistry. It is my job to guide their development with proper technique and discipline. When first meeting a student, I learn what their interests are and meet them at their level. Then I devise a strategy based on who they already are as a musician that will help them to advance. We begin in my Group Vocal Clinic space learning the fundamentals of vocal technique. Every session, we review a technique and go over warm up activities the students will be tasked to practice throughout the week. Once we finish the lesson, each student is given the opportunity to sing a song of their choice and receive specific feedback. Once the student has attended at least 2 months of Group Vocal Clinic classes, they will be eligible for private sessions.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
