Overview:
I've been in love with music since the age of 13, when I picked up my first guitar and decided that it was my calling. By my first year in college, I paired this with a love of teaching, studying music education during university and giving music lessons. Having taught all age ranges, I know that it is never too early or too late to learn a new music skill! Along with teaching, I have a passion for performing, especially playing classical guitar and looping, that allows me to share music with others. I have performed in choirs, bands, ensembles, and solo on national and international stages.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching music for over ten years. I've been giving private lessons in guitar, piano, and music theory since I was in college to students ranging from five to senior citizens. After I graduated with a degree in music education, I went into the education system as a school teacher. I taught pupils who ranged from five to eighteen years of age, and directed school bands and choirs. I'm an encouraging teacher who knows the importance of instilling a sense of confidence in his student's learning process. I've found that narrowing in on a student's motivation for learning an instrument is vital to keep them having fun and practicing! I ensure that all music lessons are based solidly in music theory. This gives a student the tools to become a lifetime learner.
METHODS USED
For all students, I assess their musical background, knowledge of music theory, and instrumental knowledge. If a student has previous experience, I ask them to play a short piece before we begin. If a student is a complete beginner, we start with a solid introductory foundation in music theory. For each student, I create customized practical and theoretical lesson plans that suit individual student's needs. I try to find out what each student is interested in to keep them engaged and interested each and every lesson!
LESSON STYLE
I love watching students grow in confidence and ability with each lesson! I set goals for students to gain skillsets in both practical and theoretical knowledge. Every student is different. Understanding this, I create individualized lesson plans with achievable goals that match a student's learning style and abilities. At the same time, I make sure that these goals definitely ensure progress. I encourage all students to practice every day to keep their skills up and keep that progress maintained.
