Overview:
I am a dedicated, energetic teacher who loves working with students and sharing my love of music! In 2019, I will graduate from Duquesne University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. I have taught in many settings and as many roles. I have been a middle school band instructor, music director for musical productions, assistant music director for musical productions, teacher aid for volunteer teaching services, and choral director of a college ensemble. I have also been performing music for much of my life. My two most proud performances were with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and at Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my senior year of high school when I began teaching private lessons to students of violin, clarinet, piano, and voice. After high school, I began tutoring music education students at Duquesne University for piano performance and voice. I then found success as a music director of Duquesne University's music productions, which was an amazing opportunity and I learned so much! In my studio, I love combining classical music and a genre of the student's choice. Combining styles allows for flexibility, a well-rounded knowledge, and it is more fun! Enjoyment is the most important part of music, and if you are not having fun while playing, then I am not doing my job! I love teaching students of all ages and encouraging them to perform more often and write their own music. Students of all ages and instruments are always welcome in my studio!
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. It is vital that the student has a solid foundation of knowledge before he or she begins learning solo repertoire. Once the student is ready to do solo repertoire, I introduce styles of classical, jazz, and pop for variety so the student can stay interested in the instrument. For adults, my main goal is to help them become self-sufficient on their instrument. What that means is I hope they will be able to pick up any piece of music and have the knowledge and tools to learn how to play it on their own. That will allow them to be able to play anything they want, when they want.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students be able to play music well after seeing it for the first time! When a student really starts to master sight-reading, that is when they are really mastering their instrument and are ready for complex materials. I encourage this by setting realist goals and incorporating sight reading into every lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students' desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
