Overview:
Hello! I am a performer and teacher who loves musical variety. I am classically trained as a singer, pianist, and clarinetist, and have also appeared on-stage playing everything from tuba to pipe organ! Professionally, I have sung with Lyric Opera KC, Michigan Opera Theatre and Toledo Opera choruses, and have performed leading roles with Opera in the Ozarks, BGSU's Theatre and Opera Theatre, and Indiana University Opera Theatre. I have performed as a soloist with a myriad of ensembles, medieval to modern. As a member of Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, I have performed around the world. I look forward to working with you here in the KC metro..
EXPERIENCE
I have always loved teaching, and have garnered consistent praise from my students and mentors. With beginning musicians both instrumental and vocal, I like to balance an introduction to "proper" technique and music reading with a healthy dose of play (improvisation and composition - all musicians should have the opportunity to create!). With advanced classical singers, I have the experience to coach style, diction, and presentation, and I foster the student's ability to teach her/himself. I am particularly interested in working with non-classical singers. There are unique challenges to rock, metal, pop, and other non-operatic singing, and I enjoy working with these musicians to help foster an efficient, versatile vocal instrument.
METHODS USED
I've found that beginning students are so eager to make sounds - I like to start with sound exploration, asking questions: How is the instrument put together? How do you take care of your instrument? What sounds can your instrument make? What sounds do you like making? This exploration fosters student ownership of her/his instrument and musicianship. More advanced students (with me, mainly vocalists) are challenged to explore a variety of repertoire, in tandem with consistent vocalization work - building and expanding the capabiities of each unique singing voice. I do not subscribe to a specific library of literature or teaching method. I am versed in many, to better serve each student.
LESSON STYLE
Every musician is an individual, with her/his own life experiences, prior knowledge, and fears/dreams. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to understand my students' unique goals and needs, and assist achievement in whatever way I can. I ask a lot of questions - both to increase my understanding of a student, and to gauge their understanding of concepts we're covering. I encourage the use of a lesson/practice journal to track progress, in addition to recording lessons and practice sessions for reference.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
