Overview:
PLEASE NOTE: I was unable to figure out the mapping portion of this website so I just want to let you know that I teach out of my home in St. Charles, Missouri 63303 and will travel to anywhere that’s within a 20 mile radius around that zipcode. Of course Im open to exceptions and I’m flexible depending. IM A PASSIONATE MUSICIAN AND multi-talented music instructor of over 20 years.  I'm also a professional recording artist, producer, composer, and performer.  I'm a pianist, vocalist, and guitarist.  One of the great successes of my career is working for two of the largest record labels in the world, EMI and Arista Records.   I work with celebrity musicians from past to present.  I have my associates degree in music therapy and cognitive (talk) therapy and am currently working towards my bachelor's. My passion is definitely in teaching and teaching special needs children and adults because of the rewards it provides my students. I know I've succeeded when my students have succeeded and have developed a sense of pride in what they're doing. I'm a very laid back person. I don't let too much bother me and both children and adults almost immediately feel comfortable with me. Besides teaching I love performing, doing art and music therapy and semi-professional photography. I'm blessed to be able to do what I love for a living and for and the students to see the fruits of our labor. I'm definitely a professional at all times and sometimes a perfectionist to a fault. I also have a 15 year old daughter who has got into songwriting with her voice and guitar. She just picked it up by ear which is how I learned as well.
EXPERIENCE
My experience in teaching dates back to 1998 when, in Chicago, I started my own business teaching private music lessons at my studio.  My business grew to a population of 90 students with a retention rate of 90% of students in attendance for 5 years or more.   The reason I love teaching, am blessed to teach, and will teach the rest of my life is the reward I get in seeing students grow a passion for music and grow both musically and in life. I take into consideration the whole person, not just who they are as a student. I really make an effort to cater to their individual needs and tailor their lesson to them personally and what they're trying to achieve. If they aren't sure what to work towards I'll help them figure out some good, attainable goals. If a child is at a stage where they are trying to figure out their musical tastes and the kind of music that really speaks to them I'll give suggestions to them based on their age and other things they enjoy doing. I've been teaching for 20 years and was signed to two of the largest record labels in the industry, EMI Records and Arista Records, in order to perform live and as a studio musician as well as partake in production duties in the studio as well. These record labels worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, N Sync and countless others. Thus, I worked and toured with several celebrity musicians and it was truly the best experience of my life and I', so grateful to have had that experience and to still work with them to this day. In addition to teaching within my own business, I've also taught lessons in vocal and instrumental performance and at colleges in Chicago such as: College of DuPage, Wheaton College, and Columbia College.  I've also taught lessons and workshops for kid, young adult and adult rock bands and in the studio setting with sound, songwriting and overall production. I participated with the Chicago Chamber Choir in touring parts of Europe performing various types of music that ranged from Latin to modern day choral versions of songs. We performed in many landmark churches, for example, the Church of St. Mark's in Venice, Italy. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had mostly because some of the people in attendance there had never heard such sounds or music before and brought tears to some. And that is why they call music a universal language. I also participated in a master vocal class with Sara Brightman who originated the role of Christine in Phantom of the Opera and went on to having an enormous career. I also had master classes in score composition with Tim Rice and Alan Menken who partnered up to write many award winning soundtracks such as: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Alladin.
METHODS USED
The main priorities of my teaching method is to make the learning process fun, use the music the student likes and is inspired by as the foundation of the lesson plan, keep a perfect balance between the technical and creative aspects of the lesson, and tailor the lesson to the student's individual needs and goals.  I also provide the student with books from publishers such as Hal Leonard, Bastien, Faber, and Alfred.  I also train my students in performance techniques as well. My method is simple yet has many facets to it. In the first lesson I like to make sure the student feels comfortable first of all and get to know them as a person: things they like, things they don't like, favorite singers or bands, if they remember what they've learned already (if they've previously had lessons), what they'd like to learn, what they'd like to do or accomplish, if they have an interest in writing their own songs. I'll try to get them engaged and comfortable by singing a song together that we both know and in general have a good time. I get the student their first set of books at their first lesson which I pay for as a complimentary thing. I'll ask the student to make me a list of as many of their favorite songs or bands that they can think of and would like to learn in order to get familiar with their musical taste and to have something to work towards with them, almost like an incentive for them. I try to keep a good balance between drilling them on theory and doing the more creative and fun stuff. I like to teach music theory through the songs they learn as they tend to absorb the information better that way. I also teach songwriting and do a healthy amount of ear training. I also like to integrate singing in whatever instrument they're doing just because it helps to develop the ear. Overall we cover: Major and minor scales Major and minor chords 7 chords Chord inversions Hanon finger exercises Playing by ear Songwriting A study of the different composers from past to present that had the largest impact upon music today and why. Learn to play different genres/categories of music so they are well-rounded Rhythm through clapping and counting out loud and writing it down beneath the notes Note reading using various strategies Learning the circle of fifths (relative minors) And the list goes on....but these were the topics that come to mind right away as they are the most important to me. I like to make small attainable goals at first when it comes to practice but the goal is always 30 minutes for 5-7 days a week. Especially for my younger students, I do like to give rewards for good practice. It helps a lot.
LESSON STYLE
Giving the gift of music is a priviledge and an honor to me.  I love to see my students grow in ways both musically and in life.  I see students gain confidence they never thought they'd have and go for opportunities they never thought they'd get!  I make an exceptional effort to make the student comfortable and to move at the pace the student needs to while giving them just enough push to achieve success as defined by them.  I also make an effort for my musical passion to be contagious and give the student what they need to keep their drive for musical success!
