BA, University Of Southern California, Music

AA, Pierce College, Music

Overview:
I tend to wear many hats as a musician. In addition to being a drum and percussion teacher, I am also a composer of instrumental music, a director for various ensemble groups, and a developer of new innovative Music Theory concepts.  I serve as an advocate of recycling and strengthening ties between local musicians and their communities and will occasionally conduct seminars on upcycling waste materials and everyday household items into percussion instruments. In my spare time, I enjoy performing with the NFL Dallas Cowboys’ Rhythm & Blue Drumline.
EXPERIENCE
I have been a learner of music since 1996 and an educator since 2004. My primary focus includes drumset, drumline, classical percussion, hand percussion, mallet percussion, keyboard percussion, music theory, and music composition. I have done a lot of traveling and have been fortunate to have taught private drum/percussion lessons throughout New York, Washington, California, Japan, and now here in Texas. While attending Pierce College in Tacoma, Washington, I formed the campus Percussion Ensemble; performed with the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Choir; and also tutored Music Theory. While attending the University Of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, I performed with the USC Trojan Marching Band and the Afro-Latin American Jazz Ensemble. As a professional performer, I have had so many amazing experiences playing with the NFL Seattle Seahawks' Blue Thunder Drumline and the NFL Dallas Cowboys' Rhythm & Blue Drumline. As a director I have had led the Parish Episcopal Camp Drumline in Dallas, Texas; the Dallas ISD performance group Medrano Rock!; the Seattle Lecture Arts Program (SLAP) in Seattle, Washington; and the Pierce College Percussion Ensemble in Tacoma, Washington. Most recently, I earned my Texas Educator Certificate for Music (EC-12) while teaching Pre-K through 5th grade General Music for Dallas ISD in Dallas, Texas.
METHODS USED
It is important that students take ownership of their education. To encourage this, I provide maximum opportunities for freethought, creativity, and critical thinking. It is also equally important that educators take ownership of their teaching. And so, I typically will refrain from teaching out of a textbook and will guide my students in creating their very own personalized textbook(s). The bulk of the content inside such personalized textbook(s) may derive from engaging activities, discussion, games, self-exploration, creative assignments, repertoire, warm-ups, breakdown exercises, rudiments/scales, pop culture, history, music theory, philosophy, and so much more!
LESSON STYLE
Committed to providing rigorous curricula that promote critical thinking and creativity, my approach towards teaching is wheeled by the philosophy of "one-size-does-not-fit-all". I am continuously adapting my teaching to best meet the needs of each and every student by adopting such techniques outlined by that of Dalcroze, Kodály, and Orff, as well as employing some of his own. I strive to instill self-discipline and accountability amongst my students while actively communicating the importance of success in music, since success in music will ultimately afford success in life!
