Overview:
I am a professional musician (mainly a bassist) who recently moved to Los Angeles after living in Washington, DC for the past 8 years. In 2012, I graduated from George Washington University with Bachelor of Arts in Music with magna cum laude honors. During my years in the DC area, I have performed with many different jazz combos, the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, the Jennifer Scott Quartet, funk bands, Latin groups, tango groups, church bands, musical productions, and classical orchestras. Venues in DC where I've performed include Kennedy Center, Lisner Auditorium, Bohemian Caverns, Twins Jazz Club, the Embassy of Uruguay, the Embassy of France, IOTA Club and Cafe, and Ritz-Carlton hotels. I have also played in a couple of venues in Brooklyn, and also did a four-month cruise ship gig with the RKO Jazz Quartet on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas. My primary project now is with the indie pop band Lux Cadenza.
EXPERIENCE
I have over three years of experience teaching multiple instruments, both privately and in group classes. During my years as a professional musician in the Washington DC area, most of my teaching has been in private lessons with students ages 4-16. (I have taught adults privately as well!) My primary performance instrument is bass (both electric and upright); I teach all levels. I taught with the DC Youth Orchestra Program - all of my students who took juries to advance levels have passed on their first try. I also teach piano, guitar, drums, violin, and cello for beginner and intermediate levels. My favorite aspect of teaching is seeing the growth of each student at their own pace and helping them achieve their musical and personal goals - I take great pride in seeing this happen! I like to work with each student as an individual - I structure lessons based on each student's unique abilities and interests. I like to make sure that anything my student learns is enjoyable and meaningful.
METHODS USED
I use a variety of teaching materials for my lessons - here is what I normally use, although depending on the level of the student and how fast he/she can pick up new things, I will make adjustments. o Bass: Vance’s Progressive Repertoire series, Simandl, original exercises, classical, jazz and blues repertoire o Piano: Faber series, Fingerpower series, Czerny etudes, original exercises, classical and popular music repertoire o Strings: Strictly Strings , Essential Elements , Suzuki o Guitar: Essential Elements , original exercises, jazz, blues and popular music repertoire o Drums: 1001 Drum Grooves , Stick Control for the Snare Drummer , popular music repertoire
LESSON STYLE
I never go into a first lesson with a new student with any expectations - everyone, regardless of age, is exposed to music differently, thus each person has their own unique experiences. I always like to start with new students by asking the following questions - What music do you like listening to? (genre, artist, etc.) What do you like about your instrument? What other instruments do you like? (for kids) What are your favorite subjects in school? (many basics in music often intersect with other school subjects) What are your goals (short and long term) with music/these lessons/other personal goals? From there, we go forward, learning necessary techniques and repertoire. When it comes to teaching technique, I try to avoid using terminology like "the right way" versus "the wrong way". Instead, I use "better way" or "more efficient way", and then explain why.
