Overview:
I am an accomplished freelance trumpet player in the New Jersey area. As someone who began their studies in the fifth grade, I have continued to pursue music all throughout my college career. As of late, I have been been heavily involved as a Jazz/Latin Jazz trumpet player in numerous organizations and professional ensembles. These include the Brevard Summer Jazz Festival, the New Brunswick Jazz Project, the New Jersey Jazz Society, the Institute of Jazz Studies, the Rutgers Afro Caribbean Ensemble, and the Rutgers University Jazz Ensemble. I can also be heard playing with the salsa band “Orquesta sin Nombre” every Thursday night at Tete’s Peruvian Restaurant in Highland Park, NJ. In addition, my early training has enabled me to be an exceptional classical trumpet player as well. Because of this, I have also become a successful freelancer for various Church services, Brass Bands, Wind Ensembles, Wedding Bands, and Musical Theatre companies. These include but are not limited to the Imperial Brass Band, the Herald Band, the NJMEA Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble, the Villagers Theatre Company, and Playhouse 22.
EXPERIENCE
I currently have three private students from the West Windsor School District that I have been teaching for the past year. In addition, I have also had teaching experience as a swim instructor for the past five years at my town's local YMCA. I am extremely passionate about helping people reach the best of their ability on their craft! Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for their instrument. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages!
METHODS USED
For all of my brass students, I use the Caruso Method to improve embouchure, flexibility, strength, and endurance. This is because I consider this to be one of the most basic and necessary aspects of being proficient and physically prepared to play a brass instrument at all times. In addition, I require my students to eventually learn all of their major and minor scales so that they can become comfortable playing in any key signature that is required of them. For adults who simply want to take lessons as part of a hobby, I try to find out what they are interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, regardless of their ability level. And lastly, I make sure to spend at least 5-10 minutes on sight reading with my students per lesson.
LESSON STYLE
One of my most important teaching philosophies is giving the student enough time to prepare between lessons. Therefore, if the student has other commitments and needs more than one week to prepare the material I assign them, I am perfectly fine with meeting bi-weekly or even once a month. I do this not only with the intention of preventing the lessons from becoming a source of stress in the student's life, but also for the sake of making the lessons more productive. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! With that said, it's important for each student to progress at their own pace.
