Overview:
My name is David and I'm a professional musician who just moved to North Austin. I came from Cincinnati, where I went to the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. I have been teaching for over fifteen years, and I'm looking to get a few new students. When I was young I asked my dad to teach me something on his old acustic guitar. Before he knew it I was taking lessons and surpassing him on guitar and piano. In high school I started listening to a wide variety of music and began teaching under the auspices of a local teacher with a studio. I eventually saved up enough money to buy a good double bass, the instrument that I would later use in college and many ensembles. I was attending school full time and teaching, at times, thirty hours a week. I joined bands that gigged regularly around Cincinnati and the country. We were recorded on NPR and a handful local, independent radio stations in the midwest. After college, I continuted teaching and found a regular gig at an upscale hotel in downtown Cincinnati. I played with in the Philip Paul Jazz Trio, three nights a week and every holiday in the hotel lounge.
EXPERIENCE
I teach guitar, piano, bass guitar and even upright bass. If it's a tutor you are looking for I can also teach music theory and appreciation. I have a knack for teaching young people, probably because when I was young when I started my musical journey. I've been very successful at inspiring a student's love of music and instilling the patience required to take on the challenge of playing an instrument. I also have experience teaching children with special needs such as ADHD and the Autism Spectrum.
METHODS USED
No matter the age or experience level of the student, I like to get them playing steady, complete sounding music within the first month. It may sound a little daunting at first, but I truly believe anyone is capable of playing music. For the beginning guitarist I typically use Hal Leonard method books, for the beginning pianist, the Alfred series. For the advanced levels I use (and have used myself) the Berklee Guitar Method and for piano, either the Easy Classics to Moderns series or First Lessons in Bach. When I teach double bass I start with the Progressive Repertoire series of method books. For the more advanced double bassist I teach the techniques of Simandl, Rabbath and common orchestral excerpts. I am very fond of teaching solo repertoire for the bassist, such as Eccles, Dragonetti and Bach.
LESSON STYLE
The first thing I like to do is get to know you, the music you enjoy and your goals. I always come prepared to lead, but in a way, I like to begin by following the student's lead.   In addition to learning from you, I intend to present you with new information, to try and broaden your musical tastes and teach you how to be an active listener.

David is not only a great musician and educator but also a delightful human. We began using David six years ago as a piano teacher for my two boys. Since then my eldest moved on to acoustic and electric guitar and my youngest electric and stand up bass. Somewhere along the way I began to take guitar lessons also (I was David's most bearded student at age 48). David always came prepared to lead but also to follow, he often asked what we were listening to and taught us how to play it. His ability to listen to a piece of music and transcribe it always left me amazed, we have several notebooks full of songs we learned individually or played as a group. After a shoulder injury David continued to impress by teaching me music theory instead of our usual lesson. I could go on forever, David made a positive impact on my family and feel fortunate to have met him.

My 8 year old son looks forward to his lesson each week and has learned a lot in just few short weeks. David is very professional, always on time, and very structured. He maximizes his time with my son and makes every minute count. I would definitely recommend him!

After signing up for lessons with David L. I knew I made the right choice. Just after a couple of weeks I didn't see him as a teacher but as a best friend. There was always a relaxed atmosphere during the lessons. He was very easy to talk to and he really listen to you. If I ever had a question he would answer. He tailors to what ever you want to do in that lesson. David L. is a great teacher and a friend. I totally recommend him for anyone
