Overview:
I love to instruct (mostly facilitate) because it is the best way to learn and I am passionate about being immersed in the music community. I have teaching experience and music knowledge and I am excited to put those two skills together to open up the world of music to others. My recent years at the University has also broadened my own music interests and I look forward to getting to know more about what each student finds worthy of practicing. This way we can create an environment where teacher and student facilitate the same process.
EXPERIENCE
I have teaching experience with instructing a psychology course at UC Santa Cruz and I have helped friends and family members learn songs or grasp concepts since I started playing almost 10 years ago. I try to emphasize taking things one note at a time as well as consistency with clearly defined goals based on the capacity of the student. I like to work with the student without taking too much of a teaching position so that there is more of a synthesis of knowledge because I am always learning as well.
METHODS USED
I like to work with a variety of mediums such as books like Harmony by Barrie Nettles, as well as videos and infographics for understanding things visually. I pay attention to what styles and motivations the student has so that we can work based on their capacity level. This way when we take things one note at a time we can make sure that one note is being played correctly. To keep students motivated I can also go deeper into concepts they really like to implement or talk about the songs or progressions in terms of music analysis.
LESSON STYLE
I try to keep things non-hierarchical where the student and teacher facilitate the learning process by bringing in what they already know. This way we do not miss or dismiss any information that could help me be a better teacher or help the student grasp a certain concept. There is also nothing I like more than seeing a student progress when they grasp a very important concept or when they reach their goals ahead of time. However I am very organized and nuanced in my teaching because I need consistency as well as the student.
