Vocal Pedagogy Certification, New York Vocal Coaching

Awards:

NJCU Musical Education acceptance.  7-time Solo & Ensemble Gold Medalist

Overview:
I am a fun loving, encouraging, and passionate instructor who loves working with students and sharing my musical knowledge with others so that they can experience a successful vocal journey. In 2005 I was awarded acceptance to New Jersey City University‘s music education program, unanimously chosen by a seven judge panel after performing an aria from Mozart’s, The Marriage of Figaro. In 2008 I auditioned for Legally Blonde: The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods on Broadway. I have since been a featured vocalist with several local cover and tribute bands, but my true calling is teaching the gift of finding one’s own voice. In my spare time, I enjoy competitive figure skating, I’m currently writing two book series, and I am an advocate for the healing benefits of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or better known as ASMR.
EXPERIENCE
Greetings Singers! I'm Dana, nice to meet you. I have over 30 years combined experience in music theory, performance, and teaching for both voice and flute. I began my musical journey with playing the flute for grade/high school bands then gravitated over to pit orchestra work. The flute is a beautiful instrument and I am grateful to play this magical woodwind! My musical interests expanded into vocals, which has been my main focus for the past 17 years. I enjoy performing as a featured vocalist for local tribute bands, however I realized my place in music is helping other singers to recognize their own vocal potential. I absolutely love it when a new singer discovers they can sing songs they once thought were out of their league. In-person and Skype sessions available!
METHODS USED
Our sessions will focus on proper breathing technique, followed by vocal exercises for learning and expanding range, work through all the registers of the voice from vocal fry to flageolet, and incorporating learned skills into the student’s repertoire including performance, continued study, competition, and audition prep. Every lesson is catered to the individual student’s needs. Each person is unique, therefore no two lessons are the same. Introductory sessions will begin with a short questionnaire to help me gain a better understanding of your vocal journey. I strongly encourage proper nutrition and exercise for all singers. I create a positive, fun, creative learning environment, as singing should be enjoyed as artistic expression. This is a no-pressure zone. I encourage my students to give their voices a chance. Learning how to sing properly takes time, and you must be patient. "Enjoy the journey!" is what I always say! *All students are strongly encouraged to record their lessons for practice reference. Please feel free to use either video or audio equipment to record your lessons. Below, please find some helpful tips for taking voice lessons. * 30 minute lessons are great for introductory / risk-free trial sessions! However, I highly recommend 45 minute or 60 minute lessons for continued vocal study for serious students in order to have the proper amount of time to cover all bases.
LESSON STYLE
I’m here to help students of all levels gain an understanding of how the voice operates from an anatomical perspective. Once a person understands how the body, mind, and soul work together to create sound, any individual can train to sing at a high level. If you love to sing, or have always wanted to but something is holding you back, allow me to help you along your vocal journey by teaching you proper technique, catered to your individual needs. Every person is unique. therefore I adapt my teachings to meet the needs of each student. Singing is not easy but if you’re willing to work hard, you can do it! And don’t let anyone tell you any differently because it has been scientifically proven that if you can speak, then you can sing! *Private Studio Singers: Please arrive 5 minutes prior to your scheduled lesson time. (Parents: students under the age of 18 may be accompanied by ONE parent only, due to room capacity.) *Online lessons are available with me via Skype or FaceTime for iPhone. If you would like to schedule online lessons with me, please make sure you are able to connect with either of those virtual platforms prior to scheduling an introductory lesson. * As of July 5, 2019: No lessons scheduled on any major holidays. Any lessons that coincide with an observed holiday will be rescheduled accordingly. *Please note: due to high demand, multiple time slots cannot be reserved for any student. Lessons are scheduled according to weekly date/time of the student's choosing upon completion of introductory lesson. For example: if a student requests taking lessons on Wednesdays @ 2pm, ONLY that time slot will be reserved for the requesting student on a continuous basis. If you must reschedule your lesson, you will be accommodated based on teacher's availability. IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED TO KEEP CANCELLATIONS AND RESCHEDULES TO A MINIMUM. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING* *24 hours notice is required for any rescheduling or cancellations. If you need to make a last minute cancellation or reschedule on the day of your scheduled lesson, please understand that you will be charged for that lesson, except of course in emergency situations such as inclement weather and/or family situations. Work/school-related issues, illness, and/or transportation issues are NOT considered to be emergencies. If you feel that you are falling ill prior to your scheduled lesson, it would be best to give 24 hr cancelation notice and reschedule when your health returns. If you are experiencing transportation issues, remember that you have the option of taking your voice lesson online. *Students are given a 5-minute grace period: if you do not arrive/sign on within 5 minutes of your scheduled lesson time (without proper notice), you will be considered a “no-show” and will be charged in full for the lesson. *Students who fail to show up for their lesson without proper notice will be charged in full for the missed lesson and will NOT be scheduled for future lessons. (This instructor reserves the right to terminate students' lessons, if necessary, at any given time.)
