Overview:

As a professional opera singer, opera director and actor, I have been described by The Metropolitan Opera’s Martina Arroyo, as possessing a solid, expressive voice capable of many colors and a talented actress with excellent stage presence and personal charisma. A critically acclaimed Verdi and Puccini heroine, I have performed as a principal and soloist with various opera companies and organizations throughout the United States and Europe. As an actor, I have appeared in lead roles in a number of Shakespearean plays with Genesis Repertory, an off-Broadway theater company in New York. I have served as an adjudicator of various pageants and contests throughout New Jersey including the Omega Psi Phi Regional Talent contest and both the Monmouth County and the Mercer County Teen Arts Festivals.

EXPERIENCE

I began teaching in 2005 when I opened my company The Classical Voice Company. I teach students of all ages, from children aged 12 to adults. I am a former Minister of Music and directed choirs for over 5 years. I also developed a yearly vocal workshop to teach choir members correct singing technique, musical theory and new music. These workshops end with a performance so that students can put to practical use what they have learned. I work with students to prepare to contests, college auditions and competitions. I have successfully had students accepted to choral and solo workshops at both Westminster Choir College and Mason Gross of Rutgers University.

METHODS USED

My technique is rooted in the Italian way of singing - cantare come si parla - sing as you speak. What is great about this technique is that it is adaptable to any singing style. So, I teach students who sing pop and jazz, as well as opera, classical and standards. I believe that each student is unique and has unique issues that we can work on, so each lesson is tailored to the student. We move at the student's pace and I create a safe environment which is encouraging and enjoyable. Singing is fun and I want the student to enjoy what we do!

LESSON STYLE

I'm very laid back and take time to fully explain what my vocal technique is and allow students plenty of time to understand and grasp concepts. Each lesson is structured, although the student may not realize that it is because I ensure that everything easily flows from one part of the lesson to the next. With new students, we first work on breathing and posture, then move to technique then singing. It is important to sing in every lesson so that the techniques learned can be instantly applied. This helps the student better connect with the technique so that they can begin to use it as soon as it is learned.

Courteney is a very pleasant person. I have enjoyed working with her immensely. She packs a lot of instruction into one hour, yet a lesson has never ended with me feeling overwhelmed. Courteney's trained method of teaching is fantastic, and in my experience has yielded immediately noticeable results. It is quite obvious that she loves her work. I look forward to continue working with Courteney and plan to be her student for a long time. I have a lot to learn and so far, thanks to Courteney I am off to a good start!
