Overview:

I'm a dedocated and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. My undergraduate study at National Taiwan Normal University was focused on Music Theater, Classical Voice, Piano, and Pedagogy. While an undergraduate student, I began providing private piano and voice instruction. While doing this, I developed a love of teaching that inspired me to move across the world to study Vocal Performance at New York University’s (NYU) Steinhardt School of Education. While working on my graduate degree at NYU, I expanded my teaching to include various age ranges as well as teaching Classical Voice and Music Theater to both individuals and group classes. I have university training in Musicology, Pedagogy, and Theatre and 20-years of training in Music, and all of which has provided the foundation for my professional career as a musician, vocalist, and actor. I have performed in numerous occasions, including singing for Chinese movie Tiny Times I (小時代) soundtrack, the World Games in 2009 – The Night of the Art, and Malan Breton’s 2015 and 2016 NY fashion show as Soprano solo. Her NYC theatre credits include: off-off-Broadway play Midnight Kill as Zhao (Lead, World premiere), Exile 5.42 (Lead), Comfort Women – A New Musical (Off-Broadway), Behind The Mask (Lead, US premiere), 4@15 - Octopus Heart (Sea Siren/Lead). Opera credits in National Theatre in Taiwan: Sapho (Andalouse, Taiwan premiere), Lucia di Lammermoor. Short film credits: Forever Shakespeare (Lead), Ecstasy Boulevard (Lead). Other credits include Ritz Carlton Hotel Advertisement (voiceover, NYC), New Taipei Reading festival TVC (Taipei, Taiwan), Creator/Director/Leader performer in an annual summer concert (2018) held by Jingo Music Company (Taipei, Taiwan) etc. I’m now working extensively as an actor, singer, and a Musical coach/Voice instructor in NYC. MM: Vocal Performance – Music Theatre, New York University.

EXPERIENCE

Teaching for me begins with a process of helping students to uncover their own inspiration for studying the craft. I greatly enjoy helping students to reflect on their motivation for learning and to embrace the process of uncovering more about themselves. This process of understanding themselves is not only focused on having a beautiful voice but also on their unique characteristics such as their individual expression of authentic vulnerability. My educational philosophy consistently aims to create a safe, structured learning environment incorporating effective and healthy methods for students to courageously achieve their best work. Further, I share with my students how sincere and consistent dedication to learning is necessary and rewarding for mastery. I also encourage students to have the courage to fail so that they can grow. Too often education systems, particularly in Taiwan, emphasize success over all else and I find this can be limiting and discourage risks and creativity. Finally, I believe in the importance of leading by example and so I do my best to ensure that I am both continually working on my own craft as a musical performer while also taking care of my mental, emotional, and physical health so I can be most fully able to serve my students.

METHODS USED

My classical piano and voice education in my middle/high school as well as my undergraduate study has built a solid foundation of my use of body muscles and breath control (for voice specifically) and the space inside the body. I focus on these foundations by working on five different positions: the lower abdomen (below the belly button), the diaphragm, chest, sides of the ribcage, and the lower back) of the body for sound consonance and sound projecting. This awareness and practice provides a clear insight of how my body functions and allows me to deliver the air, and later deliver my voice a better and more health fashion. I value how exercise and physical health helps the body develop the strength to support the body’s foundation when we are singing by delivering the air and keeping the breath support. Swimming or running are effective exercises for me to quickly warm up my body and develop my breathing for singing and overall health.
