Overview:
I recently graduated with my Master's in Voice Performance. I have performed in various styles including classical, opera, musical theater, jazz and contemporary. Though I am a newer teacher I have taught all ages of students and various styles. I have two degree's in Voice Performance as well as training in The Alexander technique, Music Theory, Piano and Music History. I also have a large background in choral works and dance experience. I have had the honor to perform with The Detroit Concert Choir, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Comic Opera Guild and Eastern Michigan University Choir. I have performed the roles of Susanna from The Marriage of Figaro, Fredrika from A Little Night Music and Ynoild from Pelleas et Melisandre. My speciality is contemporary music. I have premiered various choral and solo pieces. My master's degree specialized in contemporary music.
EXPERIENCE
I love teaching all types of music and students from church music to preparing pieces for college auditions. I have been teaching private voice lessons for about 2 years as well as tutored music theory and history to entry level college students. I also have 15 years of dance experience in ballet, jazz, musical theater and tap. This has allowed me to learn a different side of music and helps me draw aspects from this while teaching. I love watching a student learn and grow. My goal during teaching is for the student to feel confident and strong. I take my motto from a teacher/mentor who said to every one of her students "I want you to put me out of a job. I believe in teaching my students everything I know so they have all the skills and knowledge to become the best musicians, teachers and performers in the future." She has always put her heart and soul into her students. I want to be the same for my students.
METHODS USED
Though I have a basic structure for lessons, I believe every student is unique and should have lessons be specified to their needs. Beginning students who are children, I start with the basics including reading treble or bass staff, notes and rhythm, but also focus on the child having fun. For teenagers, even if they are preparing for auditions or college auditions, I believe in working on good technique and fundamentals including posture and breathing. College students usually have their own teacher at school so I tweak my lessons on what the student wants to accomplish. This sometimes includes getting another opinion on a section that they are struggling with, learning repertoire while their teacher is out of town or focusing solely on technique. Adults are focused on what the student is interested in learning. I would love to hear from you and discuss if we would be a good fit for lessons. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
LESSON STYLE
Every student learns at their own pace. Though I do believe in setting goals and structure for lessons, I know that each student will learn at their own pace and goals may need to be tweaked as the lessons go on. My goal is to help the student grow and become for confident in themselves. I would rather focus on a student becoming a stronger musician and grow a passion for music rather than sticking to a schedule. Goals for lessons also change as lessons go on. At the very beginning, I like to sit down with my students and discuss what their goals are for these lessons. Once a month, at the end of a lesson, we will sit down and talk about if these goals are the same, do they feel they are reaching these goals and tweak anything for the next month. I encourage students to always be honest with me. I would rather hear that they are unhappy with their lessons or do not understand the principle I am teaching. Having an honest atmosphere allows us (the student and teacher) to talk openly and trust one another. This will have the student feel safe which is important for growth in any student.
