ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, Florida State University, Music - Jazz Studies

Overview:
I am a trumpet instructor based in New York, NY who has experience with all levels and abilities. I believe in tailoring my approach with each student based on their own musical goals – whether they are hoping to master the basics or pursue music professionally – and strive to always provide personalized, enthusiastic, and productive lessons.   I began my musical journey playing trumpet at age 11. Beginning with the study of classical music, my love of music grew quickly, and I excelled in the Florida All-County bands. Under the tutelage of Jeremy Cadle, I continued to sharpen my technical skills and develop my musicianship, and ultimately earned a chair in the Florida All-State Symphonic Band my senior year. This foundation of classical music was later complemented by a passion for jazz, which led me to continue my musical studies in college.
EXPERIENCE
As a trumpet student in the jazz department at Florida State University, I studied under renowned trumpeter Scotty Barnhart. During my undergraduate years with Mr. Barnhart, I developed an extensive repertoire, high level of improvisational skills, and strong understanding of the jazz lineage and tradition. Outside of the jazz scene, I was a featured soloist with the FSU Marching Chiefs. By playing the lead and solo trumpet chairs in the university big bands and combos, I further garnered my performance abilities and started playing various local gigs. In addition to playing in jazz groups and Latin ensembles throughout local venues, I was a pit orchestra musician for several productions, such as “Guys & Dolls,” “White Christmas,” “A Chorus Line,” and more. When I wasn't in class or performing, I offered private trumpet lessons to middle and high school students in the area. I then earned a Bachelor’s in Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance in 2015. Upon graduation, I spent time in New York City in pursuit of more musical opportunities. While there, I collaborated with other NY musicians in the form of jams and recording sessions. I also performed with bands in various venues including the Count Basie Orchestra at Birdland. I later moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 2019, have since performed with funk/rock bands, church groups, and jazz big bands, and now am located back in New York City. I plan to continue performing regularly, while sharing my unique knowledge and experience by giving lessons to aspiring music students.
METHODS USED
My trumpet pedagogical practices are derived from multiple sources. For beginner students, I utilize “Essential Elements for Band” from Hal Leonard to create a solid foundation of sound pedagogy and engaging music to start their musical adventure. “Essential Elements” features both familiar songs and specific exercises to focus the student on the unique characteristics and unique sounds of their instrument. After the student reaches an intermediate level, I will implement method books by Arban, Clarke, and Irons into the practice routine to further improve technical facility and be able to perform more challenging and advanced pieces. For those students interested in learning how to play jazz, I supply them with ear-training techniques, sheet music of jazz standards, and listening material for reference. In addition, I demonstrate characteristics of this type of music including musical patterns that can be applied over common harmonic sequences and landmark solos for further music theory analysis and understanding.
LESSON STYLE
Although I customize my lesson plans according to the individual student, my goal is to provide them with good information and materials to help them achieve their playing goals. Along with physical tools, I will set realistic goals for them and be honest about their specific progress, acknowledging good work and giving constructive advice on how to better approach the areas that needs improvement. I am always patient and encouraging when a student is not progressing according to their schedule because it is all about the students' want and needs.
