I earned a Masters in trumpet performance from Eastern Kentucky University. I play professionally around North Carolina as a soloist and with brass ensembles. I have taught music education to varying levels for 24 years ranging from elementary to collegiate. I am Nationally Board certified music teacher. My choirs have received superior ratings at choral festivals. My choral students have made local, state, regional, and national honor choirs. My love for teaching students music stem from my past school and private music teachers.
Over the past 20 years, I have taught high school band, college level music courses, elementary music general music, elementary chorus, summer music camps from ages 4 to 16, middle school general music, middle school chorus, auditioned community choirs grades 1st through 12th, and private music lessons. Over my time as a music educator I have sought out innovative methods of teaching to improve student learning. I consider my main job to inspire music learners to love music, and hunger to grow further.
I believe it is imperative for students to better learn their instrument through use of method books, echo exercises, sight reading, scales, and solos. Whether it be voice or instrumental learning scales develops eye hand coordination, aural acuity, ket recognition, and technical accuracy. Scales are usually not the most exciting part, but I try to make it more interesting through fun activities. I choose method books and etude selection based on the current needs of each student. As they progress through each I make a conscious effort to develop their musicianship skills. Based on where they are at, and where I would like them to be I select a tangible solo or two that encompasses all they are learning for a possible performance. Sight reading is something all students should do to assess their musical knowledge.
My purpose of teaching private lessons is to inspire them to research and practice on their own. If I see them for 30 minutes to 60 minutes a week, the they spend 98% of their time away from me. I can keep them on the path to improvement, and steer them back on course when needed; however, it will be their personal desire to grow that will amazing. While my student are with me in the lesson I strongly believe it is my sole responsibility to share all my knowledge helping them to get over hurdles to make it to the next peak. I always try to stat positive, and be excited for every accomplishment, so they leave each leasso eager to practice on their own.
