Overview:
I am a passionate and motivated flutist who has been teaching for several years. I graduated with my MM in flute performance from the University of North Texas, and had the privilege of studying with several great flutists. During my time in Texas I mainly studied flute with Dr. Mary Karen Clardy and contemporary practice with Dr. Elizabeth McNutt. I have performed in masterclasses for Amy Porter (Michigan State University), Susan Milan (Royal College of Music), Dorothea Seel, Jean Ferrandis (Ecole Normale in Nice, France), and Thomas Robertello (Indiana University). I believe that it is important to keep growing a musician at any level, and I still pursue studies with Catherine Karoly of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. I am currently active as a performer, competitor, and teacher.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since I began college. I quickly fell in love with teaching and working with students of all ages. I am currently teaching in several studios, high schools, and in my private studio, but am looking to expand my studio. It is important for me to push my students to be proactive and engaged during lessons. When my students want to participate in higher levels of playing and competition, I am always supportive of their endeavors. However, I do not require my students to compete or perform. Many of my students have placed in competitions and honor ensembles, play in recitals, and have received scholarships to universities.
METHODS USED
I believe that every student should have a personalized music education. I often tailor my lessons and methods to be as interesting and stimulating as possible for my students. Eventually all my students have material for warm ups, method books, daily studies, and solo repertoire, though this is flexible for younger and beginning students. It is important that my students feel challenged but confident, and I always try to promote a positive learning environment.
LESSON STYLE
My goal as a music teacher is to teach my students the value of music as an art and a discipline. I believe there needs to be a healthy balance of discipline and enjoyment during lessons. I love watching my students grow to be proactive and thoughtful in their approach to music. It is also important to acknowledge that music needs to be enjoyable, and I look for different ways to encourage personal motivation and goal setting.
