Performed solos under the baton of Eric Whitacre
Hi there! Thank you for checking out my page. I am a pragmatic but patient teacher who loves to bring the best out of students - both musically and otherwise. I perform and teach on flute, saxophone, and clarinet, and I received a Bachelor's Degree in Flute Performance from Georgia State University last year. Currently, I am enrolled at the University of South Carolina for my Master's Degree in Flute Performance. I have had the privilege of performing across the country in festivals, conferences, and competitions, including the 2020 North American Saxophone Alliance National Conference. I have performed in band, symphonic, chamber, solo, and jazz settings.
My teaching experience began in high school, when I started to give lessons to younger peers and middle schoolers. All throughout college (for about five years now), I have been teaching more and more students on flute, saxophone, and clarinet. I've taught one-on-one and group lessons, and I have instructed marching band woodwind sections of up to 30 students at a time. Several of my students have earned district/regional band positions. I like to spread my love of music and my love of life to students, providing a space where they are free to be themselves, make mistakes, learn, and grow.
With young beginners, I like to play games and get creative with learning how to make new sounds. I focus hard on the fundamentals from the very beginning - like ear-training, embouchure, posture, breathing, and scales. As a student progresses, I introduce new material of varying complexity and style based on their strengths, weaknesses, and interests. This material can be etudes, solo pieces, improvisation, etc. I like to guide well-rounded students, so I pull exercises from all over the place and encourage students to find or develop their own. I do a LOT of demonstration; I will almost always have my instrument out during the lesson and play for or with the student. I also ask many questions and encourage critical-thinking and confidence both musically and personally.
My teaching style revolves around the concept of being a guide. My ultimate goal is to guide students toward realizing and fulfilling both their potential and their love for music. As students get more and more advanced, I provide them more autonomy with what they work on and what their musical priorities are. Even from the beginning, I like to use students' own musical and personal interests to shape how I instruct them. I help students set their own goals (both small and large) and do everything that I can to help them reach those goals. I often push students hard to reach goals, but I do so with patience, compassion, humor, and kindness. I lead lessons to develop students' technical skills, musicality, and also important traits like mindfulness, discipline, confidence, etc. My ultimate goal is to make sure that students LOVE learning, practicing, and growing.
