Overview:
I'm a passionate, enthusiastic instructor who is committed to high-quality music education for all students, no matter their age. The unique challenges presented through learning a new instrument and developing a deep understanding of music's function promote nothing but good qualities: curiosity, discipline, empathy, respect, teamwork, and more. In addition to my extensive experience in performing orchestral and chamber music, I am also a passionate advocate for composers of our time and contemporary music, as well as historical performance practice in Baroque music.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching music since my I was an undergraduate student. I worked as a music theory tutor for two years, then began teaching viola students while in graduate school at Stony Brook University. As I'm now finishing my doctoral degree, I'm looking to grow my studio! I'm happy to work with students of any age, ability, and interest. I'm also happy to provide specific lessons in music history and theory if desired. I've become extremely interested in those areas since beginning graduate school, and I love to pass along that fascinating side of music.
METHODS USED
I typically start beginning students with the Essential Elements for Strings method books. If I'm beginning to teach a student who's been playing for a year or more, I'll work with them to assess their current level and develop their personal curriculum based on that. I work with all students on scales and etudes to develop technique and aural skills, as well as repertoire that will increase their skills and excite them in the practice room. Finally, each student moves at their own unique pace, and I'm constantly assessing their pace and engagement with the music so no student becomes discouraged or bored.
LESSON STYLE
I believe each student needs a well-rounded music education. I work on all my students with scales and etudes to develop their aural skills and grow their technique. From there we'd proceed to the repertoire we've worked on, which would connect to our work in scales and etudes. I also like incorporating music history and theory into lessons with my students, as I believe it enhances a student's understanding of the music they're playing. I'm also thrilled to encourage students' interests and curiosities by incorporating their ideas into lessons as well.
