Overview:
I've recently moved to NYC after graduating with two degrees from The Boston Conservatory. I'm passionate about performance, informed singing technique, and body awareness to support both singing and living healthfully in your body. I've been teaching for 12 years, and along the way I've also been studying opera and building a career with performance opportunities in Boston, DC, NYC, and renowned music festivals both here and abroad. I made my professional debut with MetroWest Opera this past spring as Laurentia in The Beautiful Bridegroom. After finishing my Master of Music at The Boston Conservatory in 2017, I performed with the Janeic Opera Company at Brevard Music Center, performed with Hillyer Festival Orchestra, and with Guerrilla Opera as the Captain of the Guard in their world premiere of Andy Vores' Chrononhotonthologos. During my time in Boston, I performed the role of Anna Reich in Nicolai's Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor with The Boston Conservatory , performed John Cage’s songbooks for Boston Sculptors Gallery, and performed multiple solo recitals in both Boston and DC. I've worked in masterclasses with Anthony Dean Griffey, Christine Goerke, Nathan Gunn, and Frederica von Stade. This spring, I'll be performing a lecture-recital in DC connecting diplomacy and politics to the operatic canon for DACOR. When I'm not performing, I'm dancing, practicing yoga, and traveling as often as possible.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching in high school for all ages and learned so much along the way from my students. I've developed a studio in every city I've lived in as I've traveled from place to place to earn my degrees. I work with Alexander technique to incorporate movement and body awareness into my lessons to help students release tension and stress both during singing, and after they've left their practice session. The most important part of developing a practice routine and consistent love for an instrument for me is making an emotional connection to the music you're working on. If I bring in music from the 18th or 19th century to work on a certain style of singing, I'll bring in a contemporary song that's written with the same story and emotions in mind to build that connection to the art and remind the student that music has always been written for the same reason, and that singing has always been fun! I truly love building a technique that serves the student and their unique instrument. My exercises and style of teaching are based around the way singing has been taught classically for hundreds of years, though it is the exact same tools necessary to understand your instrument that lead you to being able to successfully sing pop or folk music. My goal is an understanding of your instrument and an increased range of abilities so that you can sing whatever genre you're looking to sing!
METHODS USED
For any age, singing begins with an understanding of your body and your instrument- how you're breathing, how you're standing, etc. I like to work early on with exploring a students range, finding what it is a student enjoys to sing through simple exercises, and a collaboration on what they're feeling and experiencing while singing. I like to build out of these discoveries warm ups and exercises to practice that a student can do with a busy lifestyle, exercises to sing while you're doing dishes or biking to work. As these exercises build range and confidence with letting your instrument sing, I like to introduce songs based on what it is the student would like to be able to sing. Regardless of what pieces we end up working on for the student, I always introduce some classical music to work on certain skills and work on something new that doesn't give a student the pressure to imitate a sound they've heard from a popular singer, but instead learn what their voice sounds like!
LESSON STYLE
When I'm working with a student, it's more important to me than anything that they feel empowered as a person and musician. My work is to get them to learn the power of their voice, and hearing people say they've done something they thought they couldn't is a reward so much greater than any one skill learned. I've found as a student can sing a larger range of notes and repertoire, they're also understanding how to sing and breathe from their core, exactly like in an athletic sense, which affects their posture and stature. This building up of the confident musician as each practice session goes by compounds progress and helps a student unlock so much more potential and desire to challenge themselves. It is truly a joy to help someone realize everyone is born with a perfect instrument and can sing things they didn't know they could!

Charlotte is an amazing teacher! She has been incredibly helpful in my journey with singing, adjusting every lesson to where I need help the most. She makes herself easily reachable and is super responsive to any questions that come up between lessons. She does an amazing job at explaining things I am struggling with and coming up with creative customized solutions that work with how I learn

I've worked with Charlotte last Summer (2018). In just a few sessions, she showed me how to relax and sing more naturally. That immediately reduced the tension I felt when singing, and improved my range and tone. She has a teaching style highly tailored to the individual: we tried together multiple things to let me find my voice, and it was stress-free, non-judgemental and fun. Working with her was a great pleasure.
