ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BA, St. Cloud State University, Music
Overview:
I'm a fun and encouraging music instructor who recently graduated from St. Cloud State University (Spring of 2018) with a BA in Music and Minor in Creative Writing. I pursue music because I love the positive qualities it brings to people's lives whether they are learning about it, listening to, to sharing the gift of it with other's. I enjoy teaching music lessons to students of all ages and various levels- and I care about bringing out the unique set of skills and talents that each student has. Being in the SCSU Concert Choir, Voice Studio, Chamber Choir, Women's Choir, and the Jazz Ensemble was something that provided me with great insight for what music can do on both an individual, and on a group level. Some of the greatest experiences I've had as a musician so far has been performing original songs that I've written, working with local musicians, and touring with the SCSU Concert Choir to perform in various historical areas in Ireland.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience goes back to as early as high school. It was something that I was naturally interested and articulate in without realizing, and I highly valued the mentoring that my teachers and professors provided to help guide me on my musical path. I used to go back to my high-school a year after graduating as a volunteer to help my choir teacher prepare her vocal students for solo contest, and I was told that the students found my teaching helpful. I started teaching voice lessons later in college to vocally inexperienced peers, which led me to teach from my home music studio and also at a local studio in the St.Cloud area. Other than voice, I teach guitar, piano, and ukulele. Learning to play other instruments outside of my principal instrument has given me added dynamic to what I offer as a musician, songwriter, and a teacher. I have been teaching students of all ages and levels and that is what I enjoy the most. I have learned that each individual has their own unique skillset to offer, and being able to give students the right tools to hone in on their strengths is empowering for all involved.
METHODS USED
My methods vary and depend on the age, level, specific instrument, and especially the personal goals of the student. For beginning students, I work to familiarize them with a basic foundation of music skills such as learning how to read music, ear-training, music theory, and/or improvisation. I create custom lesson plans supplemented with different learning material and/or books accordingly to each student. I am sensitive to the fact that students have different learning styles: visual, aural, verbal, and kinesthetic- and I honor that by attuning my teaching methods to that. My most important method for teaching is to make sure that my students have a positive and engaging experience with learning music.
LESSON STYLE
It is my genuine belief that music is for everyone, and that it should be something that my students can engage in and have fun with while learning. The learning environment I provide my students encourages them to explore their natural abilities while also building into the areas that have potential to be developed. My students feel comfortable to try new challenges with me because I regularly make it a point to tell them what they are doing right along the way. I treat my students the way I want to be treated which is to- make learning music an empowering experience, providing them with tools they need to reach their goals, and by understanding what motivates my students to help foster a connection between music and their personal growth.
