Overview:
I am an accomplished musician who has been playing classical flute for 22 years. After attending the Boston Conservatory, I moved back to California in 2010 where I began performing in orchestras such as the Palisades Symphony, Brentwood-Westwood Symphony, Dream Orchestra, American Youth Symphony, and Los Angeles Flute Orchestra. I have participated in and won numerous competitions in California such as the Kiwanis Club Solo Competition, the Junior Bach Festival, and the Bay Women's Club of Santa Monica Scholarship Competition. I have performed on the stages of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Symphony Hall in Boston, and at the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria.
EXPERIENCE
My excellent education at the Boston Conservatory prepared me to be a teacher as well as a polished performer. I am patient, flexible, and efficient, and looking for students of any age, any level! I began teaching at the age of 20, taking on a few students at a time during my summer breaks from the Conservatory. I quickly found that I could awaken the musical passion in my students with ease, and immediately fell in love with teaching. I have experience teaching flutists of every age, groups of students, as well as students who play other woodwind instruments or piano.
METHODS USED
My methods vary from student to student, as I am very sensitive and flexible to the needs of the student as an individual. If the flutist plays in a band or orchestra at school, I like to review the music with them so they feel comfortable with it before we move on to lesson repertoire. Scales are also very important! (yes, I am one of those teachers :-) In terms of books I consistently use, I am particularly fond of Trevor Wye's books for beginners, the 'Melodious and Progressive Studies' etude books for any level, and Taffanel and Gaubert's daily exercise book for intermediate/advanced students. Also, sightreading/playing a duet with the student at the end of a lesson is a great way to learn and have fun...and I ALWAYS try to make music fun!
LESSON STYLE
If I could put my "teaching style" into one word, it would be - welcoming. First and foremost I believe that music and the flute are fun, and I try to inspire my students to have fun and to learn, simultaneously! Every player has their own individual strengths and weaknesses and I feel that my perceptiveness as a teacher can get to the core of any musical challenge. I've always been fortunate in having encouraging, brilliant, communicative and wonderful teachers guiding me through the years, and I love taking on that roll for others who seek musical guidance!
