Overview:
I come from a long line of professional musicians, and I began performing and recording at age six. Growing up, I sang in numerous choirs and studied a variety of instruments. By the time I was in high school, (I went to LaGuardia High School of Music & Art) I had begun to write my own material. My passion for music led me to study at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where I helped to form two bands that cover a wide range of musical styles, from jazz to country. Being a performer has allowed me to travel all over the world. I have been to Europe and Asia for choir festivals, and have organized East and West Coast tours with my bands. But New York City, my birthplace, holds an incredible amount of musical talent, history, and innovation; to be a part of its illustrious community is a true privilege.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching voice lessons for about four years now. When I started my degree at New England Conservatory, many of my fellow students were singer-songwriters that were trained instrumentalists, but not trained vocalists. As I began to form bands that performed around Boston, I started giving lessons to these friends in exchange for instrumental lessons on their part. As a long time babysitter, I frequently passed the time with the kids I cared for- teaching them songs, helping them to develop their basic vocal skills and aural memory.
METHODS USED
Learning to connect to your body is a fundamental practice that is accessible at any age. Although anyone can sing, it is important to learn how to do so healthily to protect your vocal chords. Being aware of your body is essential to healthy performance. I typically begin lessons with warmups with a moment of meditation and stretching - this helps to connect a student's movements to the sounds they are creating. From there, I help the student to engage with proper vocal technique throughout repertoire of their interest, with suggested study pieces that I believe to be a good fit for their level. I primarily music by ear, but also work to develop music reading skills if the student desires.
LESSON STYLE
The 'aha' moment from a student is one of the best parts of teaching. I try to create a warm and relaxed space for students by beginning each lesson with warmups that relax the body and mind. I like help students visualize shapes and motions that create space in the body for proper singing technique. I am comfortable working on whatever repertoire interests the student- I encourage note taking and recording to retain the most from each lesson. Much of my pedagogy is based on my lessons from Cristi Catt, author of The Kinesthetic Singer.
