ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BA, Susquehanna University, Music, Music Technology MEd Eastern University, Multicultural Education
Overview:
Picking up the viola late in high school was a huge decision for me. My parents had told me I was not allowed to start violin as a child because it would be "too difficult". Once I started playing, I hit the ground running. I decided only a year into playing that I wanted to teach music. I attended Susquehanna University and majored in Music with a Music Technology minor.  There, I participated in the string pedagogy program. This involved weekly teaching seminars in addition to being paired with nearly 20 students throughout my time at Susquehanna. I participated in regular violin festivals by teaching group repertoire and theory classes. I also had the joy of being a counselor for the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra Summer String Festival. Another fond memory is conducting for a new pilot project called SU strings. I have played for the Susquehanna University Orchestra, The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, The Reading Pops orchestra, as well as countless quartets, a rock band for a nightclub gig, and as a solo artist for musicales, a recital, and on many, many other occasions. I absolutely adore teaching and teach students of all ages and backgrounds! Currently I teach a music based humanities course to 7th and 8th grade students at a charter school in North Philadelphia. As a part of that curriculum, I am teaching 200 pre-teens the ukulele. I also host an after school group violin class.
EXPERIENCE
Community Academy of Philadelphia- Creative Expression Teacher: 1 year, 200 students. I currently teach a 7th and 8th grade Music based Humanities course. In this course, I am currently teaching my 200 7th and 8th graders how to play the ukulele using current and past pop, rock, rnb, and hip hop tunes. I also am hosting an after school group violin class. Memphis Street Academy Choir Director: 1 year, 36 students. I directed a 7th and 8th grade choir as well as a 5th and 6th grade junior choir. I also took some of my most talented students to participate in American Paradigm Schools' MusicFest. SU Prep Program Private Instructor (violin, viola, cello, guitar): 4 years, 20 students and early childhood music class assistant. I led suzuki group classes regularly. Central Oak Heights Music Camp: Camp counselor and private cello and bass teacher, 2 years
METHODS USED
For beginning violin and viola students, I follow the Suzuki while including an arsenal of supplemental materials to bridge the gaps between Suzuki repertoire as well as address some of the criticisms of the Suzuki method. I tend to include many games and a variety of activities to keep even my youngest students engaged. I incorporate sight reading, ear training, and theory skills in a developmentally appropriate way throughout all levels. For my guitar and ukulele students, you can expect the same attention to detail with the added spice of current popular tunes. I teach students the most essential skills in a progression that allows them to begin playing instantly.
LESSON STYLE
A private lesson is a fluid conversation between teacher and student. My goal in every lesson is to allow my student to feel at ease and successful while pushing them to the next level. By setting clear goals and sequencing each lesson appropriately, my students feel a sense of true accomplishment immediately. For my youngest students, lessons are disguised as play. They learn how to play their instrument, aural skills, and sight reading skills while being engaged with songs, chants, dances, games, and even art based activities.
