ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
M.Ed., Arizona State University, Early Childhood M.M., Bowling Green State University, Clarinet and Piano Performance B.F.A., State University of New York at Purchase, Clarinet Performance
Overview:
I have had a love of music since I was 8 years old.  I have been teaching music for over 20 years and enjoy working with students and sharing my love of music to children and adults alike.  In 1993, I graduated from the State University of New York at Purchase with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degreen in Clarinet Performance.  I had the privilege of studying under Ben Armato who was a clarinetist for the Metropolitan Opera for many years.  Shortly after completing my undergraduate degree, I went to Bowling Green State Univeristy and graduated with a Masters in Clarinet and Piano Performance.  Most recently, I have had the opportunity to begin developing a music and movement program for young children called Play to the Music.  In 2015, I graduated with a Masters in Early Childhood Education from Arizona State University.  Having both a strong music and education background has only continued to strengthen my love of teaching.
EXPERIENCE
During my graduate college years at Bowling Green State University, I began to really find out how much I enjoyed teaching students and the pleasure in watching them growing musically as well as personally. I have been teaching students consistently in my home studio for over 15 years.  Encouraging students to not only learn how to read music, but to love what they are playing, has always been one of my main beliefs in enjoying and exploring the world of music and all it has to offer.  I encourage my students to practice so they can continue to learn, but most importantly to have fun in the process.  My students are also encouraged to perform in recitals no matter what level they are at, at that given time, so that they can feel comfortable and proud of their accomplishments as a musician.  I always welcome the opportunity to teach students of all ages!
METHODS USED
My teaching methods vary depending on the student and the best ways to promote learning.  Each method/lesson book has a different approach where one may work better than another.  I feel meeting and talking with my students and parents is a great way to determine what is the best fit and approach.  In many instances I will begin in one method and progress to another method contingent on the student's needs at that time.  Whether a beginner, intermediate, or advanced student, I encourage playing classical or any other genre of music that students find enjoyable.  I have on many occasions written repertoire to suit each level so that students can continue to progress.
LESSON STYLE
My approach to teaching has always first and foremost been to tailor my instruction to a student's enjoyment but to have set goals so they can see their own musical growth.  I find it most important to be able to read notes and will individualize this process in any way I can, so that it is not a challenge, but a fun way of showing students how it opens them to appreciate music even more.  I have also found it important to modify instruction to a student's needs especially if it inspires them to learn!
