My name is Brison and I’m 31 years old. I’m a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love for music. In 2015, I graduated from American Military University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. In 2017, I graduated from American Military University with a Master of Arts degree in Humanities and a concentration in music history/music appreciation. I began playing guitar at the age of 6 under the instruction of a private teacher until the age of 18. At age 16, I interned at mauve studios for audio engineering - a well known studio for high-profile country, punk, metal, indie and alternative artists. As a homeschooled student music, performance, arts, language and literature was at the forefront of my curriculum. At age 18 I began playing in numerous touring bands - ranging from LoD (80s/early 90s speed metal), Margin of Error (experimental death metal), Genteel (80s Christian hair metal), Sabbator (80s Christian speed metal), Frywdyr (German 80s Thrash/speed Metal), and numerous others. Aside from my academic background, I have taken extensive measures to always push myself technically. I’ve taken numerous non-academic coursework through Musician’s Institute of Los Angeles, Berklee University, McRocklin Guitar School and Los Angeles Guitar Academy (classical). I’m always searching for ways to push myself to the next level and become the best technical player I can be, even after 25 years. Sometimes that means pushing myself to learn very obscure guitar styles like Nordic folk music, Russian folk music, classical Persian folk guitar, gypsy jazz, bluegrass, funk shredding (interesting hybrid of metal and funk) and others. I’m very inspired by heavy metal neoclassical shredders of the 80’s and very early 90s - i.e. Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Jason Becker, Michael Batio, Tony Mcalpine, etc.
My teaching experience dates back to high-school, where I began teaching lessons as a private instructor in a local music shop. Encouraging regular practice on a continuous schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for non-hobby students in order for the student to progress with their passion and their instrument. With that much said, if a student isn’t having fun with their lessons and the developing with the techniques they are learning, then I haven’t done my job! I encourage students at a certain level to join a band or a group of jamming musicians and work on writing their own material. Songwriting is an important and integral part of my curriculum. Both of these aspects to learning an instrument are vital to confidence and the development of a musician. I enjoy teaching students of all ages!
For beginning students, I will teach them the essential elements of music theory/composition, finger exercises for dexterity, chords, scales, arpeggios, basic techniques, and begin working on learning songs they enjoy. After the student has progressed and has a grasp on fundamentals, I will begin to introduce appropriate improvisation skills, encourage them to find a band and begin working with the student on song writing. For others, I try to find what the student is most interested in, guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons fun/engaging and focus on what the student is wanting to get out of lessons.
Nothing is more rewarding to me than seeing one of my students develop a passion music and for their instrument. Therefore, it’s important to me that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals each week during lessons. Reinforcing student progress by acknowledging accomplishments in turn fuels a students desire to progress and learn more! By trying to find out what inspires or reinforces the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their needs and desired outcome.
