In 2017, I was the recipient of the Bart Pitman Scholarship through the Delaware Valley Music Club. I also recently performed solo concerts in upstate New York and at Stony Brook University.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience goes back to high school when a teacher approached me and asked for lessons for her daughter. I was hesitant but it was one of the best decisions I ever made because it opened up my love of teaching piano. I had taught swim lessons previously for a few years but never piano. Now, I love teaching. I always make it a point to make sure the student is enjoying the lesson, especially the younger ones. It is easy to build a passion for music but also easy to lose it; it's my job to make sure they don't lose it! In college, I've had to opportunity to create studio classes where I give constructive criticism a create an overall encouraging environment.
METHODS USED
There is a balance between technique and understanding the history and circumstances of the piece and this leads to deeper learning and musicality. Each student is different.; I strive to tailor lessons to their own individual personality. I learn from each student’s personality; this leads to a symbiosis where both the student and I can help each other to greater understanding. For young beginners, I incorporate fun and interactive games and homework to help ingrain that knowledge. For more intermediate learners, I draw on their curiosity to further their musical knowledge and musicality. For advanced learned, I try to help delve into their musicality and draw out the musician they strive to be.
LESSON STYLE
A teacher should inspire the student’s own personal musical growth. As a teacher, I strive to not only maintain but increase the student’s passion in piano. Skill comes from practice but musicality comes from the heart. I believe that a student cannot truly understand the music without wanting to understand. In order to understand music, it is important to learn about the history and theory of the music. I also emphasize understanding the most. My passion comes from helping others to understand the joy and extra-dimensional level of piano; the kind of happiness that comes from playing music earned through hard work and musicality.
