Overview:
Since 2009 I have been teaching young musicians as a middle school band director in the Cambridge Public Schools. Prior to joining the Cambridge Public Schools, I was a band director, for three years, in the School District of Philadelphia.  In addition to a busy teaching schedule, I have extensive experience performing as a trombonist and am currently the Solo Trombonist for the New England Brass Band.  My most influential trombone teachers include Matthew Vaughn, Associate Principal Trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra; Don Lucas, internationally renowned trombone soloist and Chair of the Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion Department at Boston University; and Ian Bousfield, former Principal Trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra.
EXPERIENCE
For nine years, I have been a passionate music educator and have taught trumpet, trombone, french horn, baritone, flute, clarinet, and alto saxophone students.  I have experience successfully building beginning band programs in the Cambridge Public Schools and School District of Philadelphia.  I also currently serve as the Assistant Conductor for the Cambridge All City Band.  Furthermore, I have served as an auditions adjudicator for the Philadelphia All City High School Band and Orchestra ensembles.  I am an excellent motivator for young musicians who have a passion for music performance.
METHODS USED
I customize my teaching to the individual student in order to maximize growth and student engagement.  I have experience teaching beginning students using the following method books: Standard of Excellence, Essential Elements 2000, Accent on Achievement, and Rubank.  Most often, I recommend a beginning private student to use the Rubank method book 1 for their initial lessons.  For more advanced students, I encourage studying solo works and fundamentals that pertain to auditions for honors/community ensembles and district and state level auditions such as the MMEA District and All-State auditions.  I have also written my own method book for advanced trombone students called "The All-State Trombonist - Fundamental Practice Exercises for the Trombone Performing Artist".  Additionally, for advanced trombonists I recommend and teach using the following methods: "Melodious Etudes" by Rochut, "Sixty Selected Studies" by Kopprasch, "Arbans's Famous Method" by Arban, "Studies in Clefs" by Blazhevich, and "Lip Slurs" by Edwards.
LESSON STYLE
The student must be having fun while studying their instrument; otherwise, the student will not practice.  I am able to engage student musicians in taking ownership for their learning.  I have experience creating lesson plans and developing curriculum in order to give student musicians the readiness they need to achieve their musical goals.  I am patient and flexible.  Moreover, I have a variety of ways of explaining fundamental practice techniques to students specific to their instrument so they can persevere through their musical challenges.
