Overview:
I am a saxophone and clarinet teacher that has a passion for performing and teaching! I have worked with students of all age since I started teaching private lessons while I was in high school. I am active as a performer, performing concertos with the Central Michigan University Orchestra and the Georgia State University Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, I have competed and advanced in competitions across the country and even the ENKOR International chamber music competition. I have attended many programs to study music with the best saxophonists in the country including the American Saxophone Academy and the Snow Pond Arts Academy.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private lessons while in high school (for about 10 years now) and have worked with students of all ages! I have worked with advanced high schoolers, adults learning to play, and students that have recently switched over to saxophone from another instrument. I work in the summers as a saxophone instructor for multiple marching bands and have worked at Mill Creek High School near Atlanta while in my masters as a weekly saxophone instructor. My main instrument is saxophone, but also feel comfortable playing and teaching clarinet!
METHODS USED
I have many different method books I have used, but each student is different and requires a unique plan of attack. I grew up using the Standard of Excellence books while in school, and think that can be a rewarding first book to use. I try to incorporate as much "real" music as possible from the beginning, whether that be actual saxophone repertoire, or etudes. (Etude books I pull from the most include Klose, Berbiguier, Ferling etc.) I have many teaching materials from my former and current teachers too that I have on a dropbox folder that I make readily available to my students. I focus on fundamentals and scales in lessons as I believe these are the building blocks to be your true and expressive self while playing music.
LESSON STYLE
Each week, I keep notes during the lesson so students don't have to try and remember everything in their head, and take it home to digest the material. Typically we will start with fundamentals and scales, and then move on to more fun things (although, I think scales and fundamentals can be fun if you make them! :)) I do take input from my students and try to incorporate things they like and their interests into the music we work on and how to approach teaching them in the most effective way. I think as a teacher it is important to adapt to the students needs and not make the student fit the needs of the teacher.
