Performed with U.S. Army Band

Overview:
I'm a professional musician with 20 years of performing experience, including 7 years in the U.S. Army Band. I have performed with many different types of bands, including jazz, rock, blues, alternative, country, and steel drum. I have recorded 5 of my own CD's. While in high school, I achieved 1st. chair percussionist for 2 state honor bands, winning the position over 70 other students who auditioned. I've also helped several students to achieve 1st chair in their state honor bands as well. I have several former students who are now playing professionally. I've helped several adult students, who had never played an instrument before, learn to play well enough to play in local bands, achieving their lifelong dreams. I have over 10 years of experience teaching guitar and drums to students ranging from small children to adults. My hobbies and interests include songwriting, singing, home recording, bicycling, running, weight lifting, history, traveling, and movies. I would describe myself as a fun teacher who loves to help others learn to play an instrument.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private music lessons while I was still in the U.S. Army Band. I've been teaching in the Kansas City area for over 10 years. I encourage new students to set consistent practice goals, as far as the time they will invest with their instrument  each day. In addition I gear my lessons to each individual student's interest. I find things for them to practice that they enjoy. I have found that if they enjoy the lessons they will be motivated to practice, and they will continue to make measurable progress on their instrument. I love meeting new students. It's one of the many reasons I enjoy teaching music.
METHODS USED
I start beginning guitar students with basic left and right hand technique, along with simple songs. I use a combination of standard music notation and tablature. As they progress, I teach them to play their favorite songs. More advanced guitar students study advanced techniques, like 2-handed tapping. I work with them on soloing, or whatever else they're interested in. Most beginning drum students start by learning basic rock beats, and songs, eventually progressing to advanced fills, techniques and styles. Lessons are geared to the individual student's interests and abilities as well. For instance, percussion students sometimes focus on marching percussion techniques, jazz band skills, etc. I work with advanced drum students on developing their hands through Moeller stick techniques. I teach them to play in any style that they might encounter as well. We also work on soloing and reading.
LESSON STYLE
I teach both drums and guitar, depending on the student. This is unique because if you're studying drums, I play along on guitar. If you're studying guitar,I play along on the drums. In this way you learn to play in a band rather than just learning to play an instrument. Most importantly, it's fun! The most important things for me as a teacher are that they enjoy music, and that they make progress that they can see. I have found that the most effective way of achieving this is by giving them lots of encouragement, and helping them to set specific and realistic goals. I also teach them what they're interested in learning. So if a beginning guitarist wants to learn Green Day, I don't give them Bach. At least not the first lesson!
