Overview:
Music has been the passion of my life for over 10 years. I have played in classical ensembles and jazz bands, along with rock bands in high school. At Brandeis University I studied composition along with performing in the free-improv group. Since graduation I have played in several bands including a pop-rock band that played the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh and a funk/R&B band that played the Cat's Cradle. I believe music has been the most impacting force on my life so far and am eager to help bring that experience to those looking to learn!
EXPERIENCE
I taught my first private lesson in high school. Since then I have helped dozens of friends, peers, and clients progress in both guitar and their knowledge of music theory and composition. I love the sight of a student who begins to understand that every human is a musician, some are just not able to effectively communicate their music. Even more rewarding is helping students develop that ability and finally hearing what their music has to say. In this way I feel every student helps me see music in a new light, through their eyes.
METHODS USED
I believe that the most important thing to do off the bat is set goals. While some students want to play in concert halls and on stages others simply want to play music in a band with their friends. While there is nothing wrong with either situation they require different approaches. Combining the proper amount of technical instrument work and musical knowledge is the key, and each student of mine will have slightly different lesson structures to accomadate these goals. If a student later decides they have new goals I am more than capable of adjusting their lesson structure to help them grow into their own musician.
LESSON STYLE
The most important thing as a teacher is to spark a student's desire to learn music. While it is easy to say "if you practice you will get better", this does not encourage growth. If a student becomes passionate about music, practice is no longer work or something that one must force themselves to do. Instead, musicians begin to love practice and to think of it as a release of all the stresses of the day and a way to lose themselves in the creation of art. This is the feeling that was sparked in me as a young man, and something I hope to spark with every student I teach.
