Overview:
I actively enjoy performance and teaching students of all ages. In 2010, I graduated from San Diego State University with a Masters of Music in Flute Performance. Upon graduation, I performed with pit orchestras for an award winning children's theatre. As a performer, I have appeared on stages and venues including Malcolm X Library and Performing Arts Center (San Diego), (Barnum Hall) San Monica Ray and Joan's Croc Center, (La Mesa) as guest artist and chamber musician. In the summer, I enjoy performing in masterclass Institute in Sonoma Valley with flutists and world class musicians from around the country.
EXPERIENCE
My experience began over 15 years ago. As a pre-college student, I began teaching private lesson part time in the summer. Since then, I have been dedicated to teaching flute students. This experience includes public school instruction at the elementary, middle, high school and college. As an adjunct assistant professor, I revived a flute studio of majors and non majors on the east coast. Throughout my career, I have maintained private studios and served as clinician and coach locally in East County. Many of my students have earned positions in All State ensembles, prestigious youth orchestras, and have been admitted to San Diego's Creative and Performing Arts School.
METHODS USED
Each student is very unique and as such each student will be evaluated, individually. Largely, private lessons are a personal and creative relationship between teacher and student. For the best placement, I strongly recommend each student register for a consultative lesson for the purpose of communication and compatibility. Students will be encouraged to establish a goal whether for fun, competitive edge, or career driven. After a consultative lesson, I will discuss the evaluation with students (and parents) my recommendation on moving forward. I may recommend etudes and supplemental methods for development and practice. For example, for beginning students, I may suggest Rubank Methods, Andersen etudes etc. For the advanced students, I may suggest extensive methods for technical development e.g Taffanel and Gaubert, Altes, and many more. Recordings and audio samples may be referenced during course of study at any time. Standard repertoire will be introduced and expanded appropriately. Please keep in mind, my methods and usage are not limited to published references or conventional pedagogy. My goal is to assist students with their personal music goals.
LESSON STYLE
Teaching is a gift that keeps on giving. It is important to lead with elements that occur in naturally that surround us. By definition and concept, students will study musicianship, breath control, tone production, technique, articulation, expression, accuracy, phrasing and much, much more. However, I encourage students to think about the pure elements of sound and how our ears are very important tools. The same premise can be used in interpreting time, rhythm and pulse. We may explore different units of time in order to achieve accuracy. Each lesson we will work in tandem to create exercises for the best retention for the practice room. Self reliance empowers students to work independently and efficiently.
