Overview:
As I started learning music at a very early age, and as a person who has been on stage performing music since I was 10 years old, I believe I totally connect with the learning needs of students at any given age, more specifically that of children; I believe we as individuals or parents have a very serious responsibility to discover and then nurture any given talent in any field; I have to be thankful that my parents discovered that and by the time I was just an adolescent I got enough exposure to receive admission to the "high-gifted program" at Vienna conservatory, Austria; Before I get my Performer's diploma and Undergrad degree as well as my Master Degree in piano performance from Indiana University, I had the chance to study with great masters in several masterclasses given by famous artists like Lazar Berman (Hanover, Germany, 2004), Sergio Perticaroli (Salzburg Austria, 2005, 2008), John O'Connor (Adamant, USA, 2007). In Indiana University I was one of the very few students who was accepted to the highly competitive classes of Professor Auer, Pressler and Brancart while also studying Chamber music with Emille Naoumoff and Jazz with David Baker;
EXPERIENCE
As a Pianist: I have performed in 3 different continents for the last 20 years and have participated in several festivals (Including Mozarteum in Austria & Weimarer Meistercourses in Germany, Paderewski & Chopin Festivals in Poland and several others in Asia/ Middle-East in parallel to my studies at Indiana University). In my repertoire I have worked extensively not only on solo pieces, but have developed a passion for Chamber music and pieces for Piano & Orchestras; these include Concertos & Piano Chamber works by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms & Rachmaninoff. As an Instructor: My studies on piano pedagogy at Indiana University (where I was also an associate instructor) included teaching both beginners and advanced music majors as well as non-music majors in both private and group settings; the students age ranged from 5 years to 40 something years; I have also extensively studied music interpretation, Performance science, and music memory to help myself and my students overcome the biggest barriers on stage performance;
METHODS USED
I believe in teaching music not just "piano"; Learning music should not sound too technically challenging or analytical unless if specifically needed by an advanced student; I also believe in learning to play an instrument you learn a lot of things through doing it; the job of the teacher is not to overwhelm the student by "information" but rather to be a corrective but actively engaged observer who knows how to make music making a joyful experience; - For beginners I focus on a good understanding of the basic elements of music: Rhythm & Melody (and later on Harmonies) - For Intermediate students I use the advanced volumes of the methods material, as well as some supplemental material I introduce based on the individualized needs of the students (this may include technical exercises or Ear-training). - For advanced learners, the lessons follow more individualized problem solving consultations; the student can choose any piece that he or she prefers and I offer guidelines to help her learn the material in the most efficient way within the shortest period of time possible; * One final note on musical memory: Piano is an instrument that you are required to perform its pieces on stage by heart even for the beginners level; this is not only the area many students (and even advanced pianists) get nervous about (fear of forgetting any part of the musical score can be nerve-racking) but even teachers seem not to have a method how to help beginner or advanced students with the material they need to cover this area; My years of performing , teaching and research in the field of Performance has equipped me with some of the most reliable techniques to help students overcome the personal boundaries of performance; Put it short learning music this way is a life-empowering experience that enriches several aspects of our existence; This way music itself is not just the final goal, but a means to a greater end, to become a better & stronger human being; This is my philosophy of teaching
LESSON STYLE
I prefer no assessment at the very first session; it is up to you (or your kid) to have prepared something; a true assessment can't take place sooner than a couple months; based on this I prefer to start teaching from the very beginning without wasting my students (and / or their parent's time) with any unnecessary assessment; - For children the beginning lessons may include activities like rhythmic walking / clapping and basic tone or phrase imitation & singing (almost similar to activities that are done in Orff or Suzuki classes, but more specifically tailored for the instrument and the level of the student); - For adults I prefer not to waste time on anything unnecessary and follow the well-known methods right from the beginning (as following): - The methods that I have used in my teaching for beginner to intermediate students include Bastien, Alfred's, John Thompson; - Based on the needs and interests of the students I also add some extra material; Organization of the lessons: - At the beginning I listen to any questions the student may have while working on the material has has prepared for the session; this also includes some warm up and review of the new ideas introduced in the previous lesson(s); - In the middle we learn a new concept within the context of what I refer to as a "musical experience" which may include me playing some excerpts or briefly listening to some performance related to the material; - Finally the student is required to demonstrate what he/she has learned; the required material to be covered (reading and / or practicing) for the next session is clearly marked and parents are also informed whenever plausible (i.e. for non-adult, or non-independent learners) * One final note on "diagnostics" : I believe the ultimate job of a teacher at least at the beginning of each session for the first couple months is the establish a diagnostics checklist for the areas the student needs most help with; My years of teaching and research has also equipped me to pick these areas very skillfully I believe;
