ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA degree in Music Education, Kean University, Union, NJ

Awards:

1985 to Present: First Violinist with South Orange Symphony, South Orange, NJ. Assistant Concert Master last 10 years. Last 30 years: Contract Violinist with local community and church groups. 12 years as Church Choir Director.

Overview:
I began studying Violin privately at the age of 10. I majored in Music Education in college and have a BA Degree from Kean University. My philosophy about teaching is that a student should get enjoyment out of learning and playing their instrument. I try to encourage students to practice on a regular basis and introduce something new at each lesson, whether it is a new concept in their lesson book, or to learn a new performance piece. I also find that playing along with the student during part of the lesson is both helpful and supportive to the student, and encourages them to strive harder. I welcome students of all ages and hope to inspire them to love the instrument they have chosen to learn. I look forward to meeting you!
EXPERIENCE
I taught in 2 public school districts, Woodbridge Township, NJ and Fair Lawn, NJ, both as an Instrumental Music Teacher/Strings Specialist. Although my major instrument is Violin, I also teach Viola and Cello. I have been an active performer since graduating from college, and have played as a contract player over the years for community groups performing musical productions, and in church groups for seasonal concerts. Since 1985, I have been a member of the First Violin Section of the South Orange Symphony Orchestra, South Orange, NJ, where for the past 10 years I have been the Assistant Concert Master.
METHODS USED
For young beginners I usually use the Samuel Applebaum String Builder Series with supplemental technique books by Applebaum as well. If a student prefers to us a method that they have started to use in their group lesson in school, I will consider using that for their lesson with me also. Scale studies and solo performance pieces are introduced when the student is ready. By the end of their first year of playing, a student will have worked on Method Book lessons, Scale Studies, Etudes for Technique and Musicianship, and Solo Performance Pieces. For beginner adults, I may start them with the Wohlfahrt Elementary Method or Applebaum books, and ask them if they have any songs or pieces that they might like to play and provide it for them at a level they are comfortable with. For intermediate to advanced students, I would like to see what they have worked on in the past and I will select appropriate repertoire for them to continue their progress.
LESSON STYLE
Every lesson I teach is a review of what was taught at the previous lesson, and then new material is introduced to practice over the next week. I encourage students to take their time to learn a new concept and provide material that is just challenging enough so that the student is not discouraged and gets satisfaction from their hard work. I request that students practice a set amount of time during the week, filling out a practice record. For younger students, I ask that the a parent looks it over and signs it. I will comment on the record sheet about the lesson and the student will get a star from me for a filled in practice record and a lesson well done. For older students, I ask that they keep a record of their practice time so I can tell if they are practicing enough for the amount of music they are given.
