Overview:
I am a passionate and motivated teacher & performer primarliy grown out of the marching arts. Performing and teaching at a world class level for decades, I have been well groomed in any musical style that any of us will most likely ever come across. I bring a healthy blend of rock-solid fundamentals, as well as what we are all here to actually do which is MAKE MUSIC!! I am a stickler about details, and will be patiently persistent with all my students to make changes that affect REAL improvement. Please note I also teach beginner guitar lessons!!
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching as a section leader in my high school music program via student-run small format rehearsals, and have been in love with it ever since. By the time I was a freshman at CU, Boulder, I was already teaching the best high school bands in Colorado. After 4 years of college I immediately went to London to perform with Blast! the show and have been working as a teacher and performer in a variety of situations ever since. I teach/lead by example first. I believe that attitude and excitement about our artform is the fuel that inspires persistence, and propels us to greater heights. I am to both educate AND inspire... Give someone a fish, feed them for a day, TEACH someone to fish, feed them for a lifetime!! :)
METHODS USED
Fundamentally, I seek to ensure the basics are bulletproof with all my students. Proper breathing and tone production are first and foremost, and I utilize metronomes and tuners exhaustively as they only speak the truth. Long tones, flexibility, articulation, fingers, dynamic control, range, various styles, sightreading & prepared reading, and everything with emotional musical direction. I aim to make our technical fundamental routine muisically engaging by relating each skill to a real life musical situation, and likewise I aim to break down the musical materials into quantified bits that relate to the fundamental skills we will build together via the technical routine so students can relate specific skills to their performances and understand WHY we do them. In my experience this is the best way for me to affect dramatic improvements in an efficient manner, as well as to keep the lessons fun and engaging.
LESSON STYLE
I always take into account the student's goals and work from there. In other words, each student has a say in their own curriculum. In response to this conversation, I taylor each lesson and a curriculum over time to reach and surpass these goals. My students all bring a staff-lined notepad in which I record weekly assignments, which will keep us on track for the long term - if you prefer a digital format I can be convinced to use another "platform." I incorporate everything from actually playing the instrument to philosophical discussions including listening to & watching recordings of supreme examples of the artform. I utilize many method books and I am always open to new methods as I am still learning myself!!
