Overview:
I'm a motivated and good listener teacher who loves to see his students accomplish their objectives. I have a Masters degree in Jazz from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor in Classical Double Bass from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Austria. I'm a active musician, both as a leader of my projects as well as sideman. I have played all around Europe, Egypt as well as much around in the new York area. I have also released two albums under my name, composing all the music in both of them.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for 4 years. Right after finishing my Bachelor degree, I started teaching in two music schools in Portugal: Academia de Amadores de Música (one of the most important music schools in Lisbon) and ESTAL. I have also made part of the staff of the Conservatório de Música of Azores, where I traveled monthly to teach local students. I have taught double bass, music theory and conducted the school's orchestra. Since I moved to New York, I taught through the Manhattan School of Music Outreach Department, teaching young students about Jazz and Improvisation. I have also taught privately in my home studio.
METHODS USED
I usually start by talking with the student about his/her objectives and, if they already have some music knowledge, I ask them to play so that I understand the level and things to work on. I use several methods, both classical, jazz and recordings/transcriptions, in order to improve my students skills. Typically, I suggest what to work on, based on the student's needs, but I am also open to students suggestions and interests, both in music, repertoire and skills. This way, I try to give the necessary tools and fundamentals for a good progress, as well as motivating the student for their personal interests.
LESSON STYLE
First of all, I want to know what are the students wills and objectives in music. Understand why they want to learn music and what are their interests. This is a major thing to me, to know the student. After that, I work my way by giving the student material that will improve their skills and knowledge. This can be done by several methods (classical, Jazz, etc) that I have or by assignments that I will create in order to solve specific problems. I also want to focus on specific music interests that the student have, by giving repertoire and musical examples that will motivated them.
