Overview:
I am a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music, Vocal Performance with a Musical Theatre Concentration. I am an instructor, as well as a professional actress, and have performed all over the country, as well as internationally. This past spring I had the amazing opportunity to sing in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. I have been teaching piano and voice to students for over 3 years now, and have had more than 35 students since I started teaching. I now not only teach in-home lessons, but online lessons through Skype as well! This is a perfect option for the student who travels frequently, and ensures that we are able to have a lesson, even being thousands of miles away from each other!
EXPERIENCE
Growing up in a musical household, I was always around the piano. My mom has been a piano teacher for over 25 years, and I grew up watching her teach students in our home. She started teaching me piano lessons from the time I could walk. When I starting studying music in college and became an upperclassman, I decided to start teaching voice and piano lessons myself, and have grown to love it. I have now been teaching for 3 years, and couldn't imagine any other part-time job that I would enjoy more!
METHODS USED
For piano, I usually start out younger kids with Alfred piano books, and based on their experience, I start them on the level I feel they are most suited for. For teens and adults, I typically use the Alfred All-In-One Theory,Technic, and Lesson Book. It is a great tool to learn music theory, rhythm, and sight-reading. I also like to use supplemental technic and scale books for those students that wish to be challenged. I want my lessons to be fun for all students, and try to cater them to what they are interested in. For voice, I let the student pick which style he/she wants to study in. It is important to me that my students enjoy what they are learning, and I usually pick a handful of songs I feel would suit each individual voice student, and let the student choose from that list which song they would like to start working on!
LESSON STYLE
I think it is important that students have fun learning their new skill, and I strive to make each lesson enjoyable for them so that they want to learn and grow. I personalize each lesson to fit the individual needs of the student, and try to incorporate fun ways in which they can learn. I understand that each student learns at a different pace, and I will never try to push them beyond what they are ready to do. I do however, encourage them to practice as much as their schedule will allow them to on a regular basis, so that they will become proficient in their instrument. It is so rewarding to see a student's passion for music grow, and I encourage them to set goals for themselves.
