Overview:
I am extremely passionate about all styles of music and helping others build on their own innate musical abilities! Originally from Rhode Island, I began learning the piano and trombone at a very young age. Throughout high school I was presented with many amazing musical opportunities such as being selected for the All Eastern Honors Band. I attended Ithaca College where I graduated with two Bachelors of Arts degrees in Music Education and Trombone Performance. I currently live in Brooklyn, New York where I teach music and perform regularly with the Brooklyn Wind Symphony, Metropolitan Quintet, and many other funk, reggae, afrobeat, jazz, and rock groups.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private lessons for over eight years in Ithaca, NY, Colorado, and New York City. During my time in Ithaca I was considered a first call trombone instructor for many of the middle and high schools in the surrounding area. My success is attributed to developing a strong relationship with the student and their needs, while also maintaining an expectation of hard work and organization. I consider variety to be the key to success in any learning situation, so I tend to utilize many teaching techniques throughout the lesson to keep things fun and interesting! Outside of private teaching, my classroom experience extends to directing the Wind Ensemble at Cortland high school, brass master classes, teaching assistant at the collegiate level, and many early development and after school classes around the city.
METHODS USED
I am open to teaching students of all ages and musical backgrounds. The structure of my lessons varies and is catered to the needs of the student, but most contain elements of the following: warm up, ear-training, singing, rhythm development, proper technique, review of etude and solo repertoire, duets, and assignments for at home practice. Most students study with method books assigned by myself, and generate supplemental materials as we progress. My students are required to carry a notebook to all lessons to keep track of practice assignments and major points covered in the lesson. My students are expected to practice regularly and work hard during lessons, but the main goals are to have fun and make musical moments.
LESSON STYLE
There is nothing I enjoy more than sharing my passion for music with others! I find that positive reinforcement paired with discussions of the benefits of perseverance help to create success in my students. Every student learns a little bit differently, and it is my job to tailor my instruction to suit these needs. Overall I like to create a creative, challenging, and exciting atmosphere at each lesson.
