Overview:
Hi, my name is Adonai and I have been playing trumpet for 13 years, trombone for 5 years, and piano for 20 years. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Bowling Green State University. I have been teaching music lessons for 3 years. While I can teach many different genres of music, my favorites are Jazz and Contemporary. I perform regularly at blues jams in the Greater Cleveland area, and am currently pursuing a Master of Music at Cleveland State University. I'm excited to meet you – sign up today and let's get started!
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since I was a freshmen in college. I have been teaching private lessons on and off for about 6 years now. I have also been instructing small ensembles of brass instruments since January 2018. I encourage my students to have a regular practice schedule as they will encourage getting familiar with their instrument. My big focus initially will be on learning the fundamentals and memorizing many of the exercises that they will be given over the course of my instruction. I believe that making music is a type of social event, so I will encourage my students to perform for and with their peers. Music is always more fun when you play with someone else. My students are encouraged to create their own music as well. I'm always looking to bring new students of all ages!
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Faber Piano Adventures, Standards of Excellence, and/or any beginning book the student will enjoy. For beginning adults, the Rubank Elementary Method books, the Older Beginner Piano Course by James Bastien, and/or any other books the student would enjoy. Along with those books of instruction, I would encourage students to learn level-appropriate solo repertoire. At the intermediate to advance level, I would encourage the Hanon Virtuoso Pianist book, the Sonata Album for the Piano from Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics, and the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet and for Trombone. I would also begin to encourage students to memorize all twelve scales.
LESSON STYLE
Teaching isn't about showing other people what I know. Teaching is about helping the students fully realize their own potential. However, there is a basic knowledge of how the instrument is played, and how the music itself comes together that helps that process along. I want to do more than simply teach a student to play a piece or an instrument. I want the music itself to come alive in their hands. And, hopefully, I will be able to learn something from the student that will increase my own musicality.
