Teaching Methods: The advantages of private lessons over in-class tuition are legion. All children learn differently, no matter how old, and if I can recognize the student's specific needs - be it confidence, focus, a goal - the classes can be tailored to meet individual needs. Another advantage is rate of progress. In class the faster learners can lose interest as the slower struggle to keep up. All can arrive at the destination but not all take the same path.

Teaching Styles: Playing/singing music is the goal but just working on the ability to play/sing a piece is only half the battle. The instrument is owed attention. Without good, solid technique acquired from scales, exercises, balance/hand position, etc., a partnership with the instrument cannot develop. Without that partnership, performance will be proficient at best; the magic will be missing.

For younger students who are in a school band program, I like to use the materials they use in class and to add outside material they find interesting. I find students are more motivated to practice and develop when we start with something that interests them, and then to expose them to other styles of music later on. For older or more advanced students, I like to focus on aspects of musicianship that will help them be successful musicians, such as ear-training, theory, composition, performance practice, improvisation (if the student wishes) and transcribing.

Beginning students for woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone) usually start with the Essential Elements book. As they advance the next books are usually Breeze Easy book 2 followed by the Rubank Intermediate and Advanced Methods. Advanced students will break into instrument specific methods. Flute with use methods such as The Melodious Studies and Pares scales books, clarinets with use the Klose books and Saxophone students will use Ferling and Klose studies. Students wishing to study jazz methods will use either the Jim Snidero or Walt Weiskopf methods. For piano students, I usually begin with the Alfred studies and select a book based on the students skill level or age. In addition, I will often provide sight reading studies as supplemental materials during lessons.
