We\u2019ll be playing in the key of Bb minor but thinking in the key of E minor\u2014a much more guitar-friendly key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The song begins with a haunting melody sung <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a cappella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rubato<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which means voice only and freely or without a specific beat). This sets the minor-key mood and then begins with an E minor pentatonic fill that launches the Em\u2013C\u2013D chord riff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a fun and easy tune that you can quickly add to your repertoire. It\u2019s also a great tune for those venturing into the world of fingerstyle playing and singing while playing. The repetitive nature of the chord progression and accompaniment pattern lend themselves to working on these skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Accompaniment Techniques<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I suggest using a combination of fingerplucking, fingerstrumming and sporadic percussive strums for playing this tune. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fingerplucking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technique is a simpler version of fingerstyle as all of the fingers pluck the strings at the same time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fingerstrumming<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technique uses the index and middle fingers for downstrums and the index only for upstrums.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">percussive strum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technique is a right-hand technique that\u2019s described below and in the video in more detail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fingerstyle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technique is used slightly as a thumb (bass) to fingers (chord) pattern that can add interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic Fingerstyle Technique<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I See Fire is perfect for beginning fingerstyle players. The right hand is notated as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P = Thumb<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I = Index<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M = Middle<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A = Ring<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I find that using a pick to strum the I See Fire chords can be a little too harsh sounding for the mood of this tune. For that reason, I suggest using your fingers to pluck and strum the chords. Let\u2019s begin by assigning the right-hand fingers to certain strings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thumb (P) plays the bass note on the 5th and 6th strings (depending on the chord, of course).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Index (I) is assigned to the 4th string.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Middle (M) is assigned to the 3rd string.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ring (A) is assigned to the 2nd string.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the essence of fingerstyle playing, assigning fingers to specific strings. This way, you don\u2019t need to look at the right hand while playing. Once you get used to it, you can \u201cfeel\u201d where you are. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I suggest using the finger-plucking technique for the verse and the finger-strumming technique for the prechorus. I explain this in more detail in the video.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Percussive Strum<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This technique is subtle but adds to the groove and feel of the tune. Here\u2019s how to execute it:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the same finger assignments as described above.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finger-pluck the chord on Beat 1.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Beat 2, bring the fingers back to their assigned strings creating a muted strum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finger-pluck the next chord on the \u201cand of Beat 2\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Beat 4, bring the fingers back to their assigned strings creating a muted strum.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Chord Chart<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve included a chord chart, which is a simple road map that shows you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall arrangement of the song.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A section by section breakdown of the song.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each chord and how long to play it for. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t read music, please don\u2019t be intimidated. This is a cheat sheet that can help you get through the tune quickly and easily. I find it indispensable for learning songs and I can also hand it to a seasoned musician and they can follow along without any problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Song Form<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Intro\/Main Riff:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A 4-measure section; the two measure Em\u2013C\u2013D\u2013Em chord riff is played twice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Verse:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An 8-measure section that is made up of (4) two-bar chord patterns; Pattern 1 is Em\u2013G\u2013D\u2013C, Pattern 2 is Em\u2013G\u2013D\u2013Am, Pattern 3 is exactly the same as Pattern 1 and Pattern 4 is Am\u2013Bm\u2013C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Main Riff\/Segue:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A 2-measure section; the Em\u2013C\u2013D\u2013Em chord riff is played once.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Chorus:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A 9-measure section; Again we see a two-bar pattern, Em\u2013C\u2013D\u2013Em from the Main Riff section. This pattern is repeated 4 times and the final time we end on an Am instead of the Em and we hold it for an extra measure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you become familiar with chord charts, you\u2019ll never want to go back. It\u2019s just easier to see where you\u2019re going when you have a map. And, it\u2019s especially helpful when you\u2019re not familiar with the song or there\u2019s a section of the song that you don\u2019t remember (Bridges and Interludes are notorious for surprising players and derailing a song\u2019s performance).
