Dominie B

Instruments:

My love of piano began when I was 11 years old while observing our church pianist, a very talented young lady in her 20s. After services were over, I would go to the piano and look at her hymnbook. I wondered what the black dots meant (notes)! One of the happiest days of my life was at age 12 when I came home from school and found a piano in MY living room! I took lessons in a neighboring city from a highly respected teacher who was preparing students to enter a music conservatory. I excelled at piano and loved it! However, I had a couple of bad recital experiences along the way. Because of this, I am sympathetic and uniquely able to help students with recital jitters and anxiety related to public performance situations. I have been a church pianist/organist for the past 25 years and have enjoyed serving in churches of all sizes. I have taught piano, guitar and voice since 1993. Besides playing for church, I have provided piano music for weddings, funerals, memorial services, and other occasions. I began playing the guitar when I was a college student at UCLA to accompany my singing.

More Information About Voice Lessons

Maintaining a healthy voice is essential for singers. Invest in your instrument when you keep your body healthy. First, drink plenty of water. It keeps you hydrated and helps your body function properly. Next, eat a balanced diet that-™s heavy with whole grains, produce and lean proteins. Then perform aerobic exercises every day. They expand your lung capacity and keep your body strong. You must stop smoking, and avoid taking illegal drugs. Finally, get plenty of physical rest, and rest your voice. You may want to sing all day, but that hurts your voice over time. Keep your voice healthy when you invest in your physical health.
Taking voice lessons in your home is a great way to enhance your musical skills without ever leaving your living room! As long as you have a piano or keyboard available, we can arrange for a teacher to come directly to you. Our professional teacher will help you learn the songs you want, and enhance your vocal skills, including the range and tone of your voice.
Vocal lessons will cover various aspects of singing, such as vocal technique, song interpretation and developing a personal singing style. During lessons, students will work through different exercises that are designed to workout and develop different aspects of the voice. Students will practice exercises such as sirens on an octave scale, as these are great for helping to develop the necessary timing and coordination needed to cross vocal registers and start building vocal range. Developing range requires maintaining vocal fold compression through the passagio and into the head voice, tilting the thyroid cartilage and modifying closed vowel sounds to open vowels. Students will also learn how to support their voices with good breath management and can apply the techniques learnt to songs of various genres. Students can also improve their tone, pitching and musical theory knowledge, as well as prepare for gigs, recording sessions or auditions.
Have you always wanted to be a singer? You are never too old to learn how to sing or to become a better singer. Musika offers individualized adult voice lessons geared to your needs. Learn to sing Pop, Jazz or Classical music, or prepare for a national competition like American Idol or X-Factor. Expand your vocal range or learn how to choose songs that compliment your voice. No matter what your musical goals are, our professional instructors are here to help. We train you to become a better singer whether you-™ve just started singing now or have been singing since you were a child.
We strongly encourage students to start voice lessons at age 11 or 12. Training a voice that is younger than this can sometimes lead to future damage if the teacher is not specifically trained to teach younger students. As soon as a student begins the process of puberty and adolescence this would be a good time to begin vocal training. We also strongly encourage students who are younger than this age to start with another instrument like piano or guitar, because this will help them improve their basic musicianship skills before progressing to voice lessons.
