I have a Master of Music degree from Georgia State University with an emphasis in Vocal Performance/Opera Studies. I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (Vocal Performance emphasis) from Tougaloo College. For younger beginners I start with simple note reading from Joe Pecararo's Read This First. This gives an opportunity to build a really solid foundation of music theory and music reading at the same time. Older beginners I take through a checklist of basic theory fundamentals of my own creation, basic chords and basic scales. Then we choose a song to learn that applies that foundation. Most of my teaching experience is with children ages 4-15, however I am comfortable teaching students of all ages and of varying skill levels. This will help them to expand on their practices at home and feel empowered to create music on their own. I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. From there we move on to learning music theory, Open throat technique as well as specific techniques involving the students preferred Genre.
