For beginning students, who especially are children, I normally start from the fundamentals of voice technique in a very informal and fun way, so the students can enjoy the process of learning with ease and stress-free. When the student has a grasp of the basics, we start building a repertoire and working more specifically on performance skills. With adults, I generally try to understand first their goals, their specific needs, and guide my instruction accordingly to maintain the lesson engaging, interesting and fun, no matter their ability level. I began teaching private voice lessons to high school-age children in 2016. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with people ages 5-30. The Metropolitan Opera Guild was an excellent teaching experience, where my mentors included teachers at Lincoln Center and New England Conservatory alumni. As a participant in NEC's Vocal Pedagogy program, I had the experience of teaching lessons to my colleagues in NEC Opera. I prefer to do half-hour lessons for beginners and young musicians. After more lessons can be prepared, forty-five minute or hour long lessons are more appropriate. For trumpet students, I rely heavily on the Arban method for the essentials and then add other materials depending on the student's goals. I try to tailor lesson plans to each individual as I believe different people want to get different things out of singing. For younger students, I will focus on the fundamentals of music such as pitch recognition, rhythmic accuracy, scale execution. These building blocks can help children confidently express themselves in music.
